Chapter 1 - The Voice Behind the Camera

The video began with Lily sitting beneath the white beauty lights.
Her little hands were folded tightly in her lap.
Vanessa stood behind her with the scissors already open.
But she wasn’t talking to Lily.
She was talking to someone off camera.
“Once the braid is gone, Chloe gets the campaign.”
My hand tightened around the tablet.
Vanessa stopped struggling.
Her face went completely still.
On the recording, another woman laughed.
I knew that laugh.
My mother-in-law, Diane.
“Just don’t cut too close to her face,” Diane said.
My stomach turned.
Vanessa glanced toward the camera.
“Relax.”
“Claire will believe whatever Ryan tells her.”
Claire.
Me.
My husband’s own mother and sister were discussing me like I was too stupid to understand what was happening inside my own family.
Then Lily’s small voice came through the speakers.
“I want my mommy.”
Vanessa’s expression on the video hardened.
“You want Chloe to be sad again?”
Lily shook her head quickly.
“No.”
“Then sit still.”
The scissors closed.
My daughter flinched.
I looked at the real Lily across the room.
She had both hands pressed against the yellow hat now.
Her eyes were fixed on the floor.
I wanted to destroy Vanessa.
Instead, I forced myself to keep watching.
Because something told me the most important part had not happened yet.
Diane stepped into the camera frame holding a folder.
She placed several pages on the beauty counter.
“We already have Claire’s signature.”
Vanessa smiled.
“She never signed anything.”
Diane shrugged.
“She doesn’t need to know that.”
My breathing stopped.
Vanessa lunged for the tablet again.
“Claire, give it to me.”
I backed toward the door.
“What did you forge?”
“Nothing.”
“What did you forge, Vanessa?”
She glanced toward Lily.
That glance told me everything.
I picked up my phone and called Ryan.
He answered on the second ring.
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
“Come to your sister’s house.”
“Claire?”
“Now.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You’re making this into something it isn’t.”
I stared at her.
“You cut my five-year-old daughter’s hair while she begged for me.”
Her smile disappeared.
“And I have it on video.”
For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.
Then the tablet continued playing.
Diane’s voice came through the speakers again.
“Once the payment clears, move Lily’s portion before Claire checks the account.”
Ryan heard it through my phone.
There was a long silence.
Then my husband whispered.
“What account?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
May you like
And I realized even Ryan didn’t know.
