Chapter 10 - What Happened to Vanessa
The first thing I felt was anger.
The second was something more complicated.
Vanessa had been seventeen when Martin Vale became her manager.
She competed in regional beauty competitions.
Diane had pushed her relentlessly.
Photoshoots.
Appearances.
Auditions.
Diets.
Rehearsals.
Thomas said he hated it but worked constantly and rarely interfered.
That sentence caused Ryan to stand up.
“You rarely interfered?”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“I failed her.”
Ryan didn’t argue.
He couldn’t.
Neither could I.
Understanding Vanessa’s past did not erase what she had done to Lily.
But it changed the shape of the story.
Martin had controlled her career when she was young.
Diane had allowed it because he promised success.
Now, years later, Vanessa was repeating the same obsession with Chloe.
Pain had turned into a pattern.
And Lily had become collateral damage.
The police found Vanessa before they found Diane.
She was staying at a hotel under Chloe’s middle name.
Monica called us after detectives questioned her.
“She wants a deal.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“Of course she does.”
“She’s offering evidence against Martin.”
“And my mother?”
“Yes.”
I leaned forward.
“What evidence?”
“Recordings.”
Vanessa had secretly saved conversations with Martin for years.
She was afraid of him.
But she had also kept working with him.
Monica’s voice became firm.
“Do not confuse cooperation with innocence.”
“I won’t.”
Vanessa admitted the haircut was deliberate.
She admitted Lily had said no.
She admitted the forged releases.
She admitted Diane helped create the trust.
Then she said Martin told them the EverBelle deal could be redirected toward Chloe if Lily’s appearance changed dramatically enough.
Diane agreed.
Vanessa did it.
But there was another part.
Martin had demanded a percentage of every campaign.
Even campaigns he had no legal role in.
When Vanessa resisted, he threatened to release footage from her teenage years that would destroy her public image.
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
“This family is insane.”
I looked at him.
“Your sister was hurt.”
“She hurt our daughter.”
“Both can be true.”
He went quiet.
That was the hardest truth in the entire case.
Vanessa could be a victim.
And an abuser.
Diane could believe she was protecting her daughter.
And still destroy her granddaughter.
Martin could exploit everyone.
And still depend on their willingness to keep participating.
Before ending the call, Monica gave us one more update.
“Vanessa told police where Diane went.”
“Where?”
“To meet Martin.”
“Why?”
“She thinks Diane is trying to get the original files before he can turn them over.”
Ryan stood.
“Where are they meeting?”
Monica paused.
“At BrightHouse headquarters.”
“And Claire?”
“Yes?”
