Chapter 16 - Martin’s Last Bargain

Martin testified for nearly six hours.
He blamed everyone.
Vanessa was ambitious.
Diane was controlling.
Brands were careless.
Parents were naive.
Agencies were greedy.
According to Martin, he merely connected opportunities to people who wanted them.
Then prosecutors began showing messages.
His messages.
The excuses collapsed one by one.
He had encouraged Diane to forge releases.
He had transferred money through shell companies.
He had threatened Vanessa with old footage.
He had knowingly used images of children without valid parental consent.
And he had told Vanessa that damaging Lily’s appearance could revive Chloe’s EverBelle chances.
When asked whether he believed Vanessa would actually do it, Martin paused.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she was desperate.”
“And did you try to stop her?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Martin looked toward the jury.
“Because if Chloe received the campaign, I still got paid.”
There it was.
No family explanation.
No emotional excuse.
Money.
Vanessa sat behind her attorney with tears running silently down her face.
Diane stared straight ahead.
I felt Ryan shift beside me.
His sister had done something cruel.
His mother had helped.
And a man who had known both women for years had learned exactly where to press until their worst instincts became profitable.
None of them were innocent.
But they were not equally responsible for every part.
That distinction mattered.
At the end of the day, prosecutors introduced Martin’s recovered files.
One folder was labeled LILLIAN M.
Inside were 417 photographs of Lily.
Some had been taken by Vanessa.
Some by Diane.
Some came from family group chats.
A birthday.
Christmas morning.
A picnic.
Lily asleep on Ryan’s shoulder.
Private moments.
Sold.
Cataloged.
Rated.
I began crying.
Not loudly.
I simply couldn’t stop the tears.
Ryan put his arm around me.
The prosecutor asked for a recess.
I shook my head.
“No.”
I needed to see it.
All of it.
Because for months I had wondered whether I had missed some obvious sign.
But that folder taught me something important.
We had not failed because we loved our family.
They had exploited access created by that love.
The shame belonged to them.
Not Lily.
Not Ryan.
Not me.
Before court ended, the prosecutor opened one final document.
A contract draft.
EverBelle.
The original campaign amount was higher than we had known.
$400,000.
But Lily’s name had been crossed out.
Beside it, Martin had typed another name.
Chloe Morgan.
Underneath was a note.
Appearance issue must be permanent enough to justify replacement.
The courtroom went silent.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Even she had never seen that note.
And suddenly we understood.
Martin had not simply predicted what Vanessa might do.
May you like
He had designed the incentive for her to do it.
