Chapter 2 - The Account With Lily’s Name

Ryan arrived eleven minutes later.

I had never seen him enter a room like that.

He didn’t greet his sister.

He didn’t ask why Vanessa’s hair had several shaved lines through it.

His eyes went straight to Lily.

Then to the plastic bag containing her braid.

His face changed.

“Who did this?”

Lily looked at Vanessa.

That was enough.

Ryan crossed the room.

I stepped between them.

“Don’t.”

He stared at me.

“She hurt our daughter.”

“And we’re not giving her a way to turn this into a story about us.”

My own hands were still shaking from what I had done.

I knew I had crossed a line when I attacked Vanessa.

I wasn’t proud of it.

But I also knew what mattered now.

Evidence.

Lily.

And the account Diane had mentioned.

Ryan watched the entire livestream.

He didn’t speak until it ended.

Then he looked at his sister.

“What account?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I don’t know what Mom was talking about.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“You were standing beside her.”

“It was content.”

“You cut Lily’s hair for content?”

“No.”

“Then explain it.”

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Ryan noticed.

“So you can leave if you want.”

He held out his hand.

“But the tablet stays.”

Vanessa laughed.

“That’s mine.”

“It contains evidence involving my daughter.”

“You’re not taking it.”

I had already sent the video to myself.

And to Ryan.

And to a cloud folder Vanessa didn’t know existed.

I lifted my phone.

“Too late.”

Vanessa’s expression cracked.

Within twenty minutes, we were driving Lily to urgent care.

The cut above her ear was shallow.

The doctor cleaned it and documented everything.

A nurse quietly asked Lily whether she felt safe around Aunt Vanessa.

Lily whispered no.

That single word nearly broke me.

Ryan sat beside her holding her hand.

Then my phone rang.

Diane.

I answered.

Her voice came sharp and controlled.

“You assaulted Vanessa.”

I almost laughed.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“You didn’t ask what happened to Lily.”

Silence.

“You called because Vanessa told you about me.”

“Claire, don’t twist this.”

“You knew already.”

“That is ridiculous.”

“I watched the livestream.”

Another silence.

Longer this time.

Then Diane’s voice changed.

“You need to be very careful about what you think you saw.”

The call ended.

Ryan stared at me.

“She knows.”

“Yes.”

He looked down at Lily.

“What account?”

I opened my banking app.

Then the college account.

Then the custodial savings account.

Nothing looked unusual.

Ryan opened his laptop.

For nearly an hour, we searched.

Finally, he typed Lily’s full legal name into an old family financial portal his father had created years earlier.

One result appeared.

Lillian Morgan Media Trust.

Balance.

$186,420.

Ryan went pale.

“I’ve never seen this before.”

Neither had I.

And beneath the balance was a list of authorized representatives.

Vanessa Morgan.

Diane Morgan.

And one more name.

Mine.

May you like

Except I had never signed the authorization.
