Chapter 1 - THE NAME ON THE LINE

Luka Moretti’s name sat in black ink across the line marked FATHER.

For several seconds, I could only stare at it.

My daughter slept against my chest, completely unaware that her life had somehow changed before she was even a day old.

The nurse looked from Luka to me.

“Sir, you can’t establish legal paternity simply by signing without the mother’s consent.”

Luka handed the folder back to her.

“I know.”

I blinked.

“Then why did you do it?”

His eyes settled on the empty corridor where my husband had disappeared with Vanessa Carter hanging on his arm.

“Because someone needed to make it clear that she wasn’t being left here without protection.”

My throat tightened.

“You don’t even know her.”

Luka looked at my baby.

Then at me.

“I know more than you think, Mara.”

My entire body went cold.

I had never told him my name.

The nurse hadn’t used it either.

I pulled Sophie closer.

“How do you know who I am?”

Luka’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Something closer to resignation.

“Your full name is Mara Elise Bennett Cole.”

He spoke quietly.

“You were born at St. Vincent Medical Center on October seventeenth, twenty-five years ago.”

I stared at him.

“My father’s name was Daniel Bennett.”

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

Luka glanced toward the nurses’ station.

“Not here.”

I almost laughed.

“You walk into my hospital room, sign my daughter’s birth certificate, tell me you know my dead father, and now you expect me to go somewhere private with you?”

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

“I expect you to stay exactly where you are until I can prove I’m not the danger.”

That stopped me.

Luka reached slowly into the inside pocket of his black jacket.

He removed an old photograph.

He placed it on the table beside me without stepping closer.

The photograph was faded around the edges.

Two men stood beside a black sedan.

One was Luka, much younger.

The other was my father.

My knees nearly gave out.

Dad looked exactly as I remembered him before cancer hollowed his cheeks.

Alive.

Strong.

Smiling.

On the back, written in his handwriting, were five words.

IF MARA EVER HAS A CHILD.

Below that was another line.

CALL LUKA.

I looked at him.

“What is this?”

“A promise.”

“To my father?”

“Yes.”

“About what?”

His jaw tightened.

“About keeping you alive.”

The room suddenly felt too small.

I looked down at Sophie.

Then back at him.

“You said you knew something about my daughter.”

“I do.”

“What?”

Luka hesitated.

It was the first time he looked uncertain.

“Her newborn blood screening triggered a private genetic alert.”

My heartbeat skipped.

“Is she sick?”

“No.”

“Then what alert?”

“A marker.”

“What kind of marker?”

“One that should exist in only one family.”

I stopped breathing.

Luka looked straight at me.

“The Moretti family.”

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.”

“I thought so too.”

“My daughter has nothing to do with you.”

“That depends on what file M-17 says.”

I froze.

He had mentioned it before.

“What is M-17?”

Luka reached for his phone.

He showed me a photograph of a hospital database screen.

A patient record had been deleted.

Only one designation remained.

M-17.

Under it was my date of birth.

October 17.

198? Wait user age 25 in 2026 means 2001. We'll avoid year.

My mouth went dry.

“That’s my birthday.”

“Yes.”

“What does M stand for?”

Luka’s face hardened.

“We don’t know.”

The elevator doors opened at the far end of the corridor.

Two men in dark suits stepped out.

Luka looked at them once.

Every muscle in his body tightened.

“Are they with you?”

“No.”

He stepped between them and me.

“Which means someone knows I found you.”

One of the men reached inside his coat.

Luka turned toward the nurse.

“Lock this floor.”

Then he looked back at me.

“Mara, whatever Ethan told you about your father’s death, your inheritance, or your family history…”

He paused.

May you like

“Assume it was a lie.”

And that was the moment I realized my husband abandoning me might have been the least frightening thing that happened that day.
