Chapter 17 - THE HEIR RICHARD CREATED

Marco Moretti’s will had contained a clause no one outside the family knew existed.
If Marco died leaving another biological child, that child would receive twenty-five percent of his personal holdings.
Ethan was that child.
If the DNA became public, Ethan could claim billions.
Richard had known.
That was why he hid the paternity.
Not merely jealousy.
Control.
He raised Marco’s son while secretly using Ethan’s undisclosed inheritance rights as leverage against the Moretti family.
“He turned me into an asset,” Ethan whispered.
Luka did not disagree.
But there was more.
If Ethan claimed Marco’s shares, the M-17 restitution structure could be disrupted.
My mother and father had discovered that Richard planned to reveal Ethan’s identity only after he had acquired enough Moretti debt to force a settlement.
Richard had spent decades preparing to weaponize Ethan’s bloodline.
“Did Marco know?” Ethan asked again.
Luka shook his head.
“No.”
“Then I spent my whole life hating a father who never knew I existed.”
“Yes.”
Ethan sat down.
I watched the rage, grief, and emptiness move across his face.
For the first time, I saw not my husband.
Not the man who betrayed me.
A child who had been shaped into a weapon by adults protecting their secrets.
It explained him.
It did not excuse him.
That distinction mattered.
The LAST envelope contained more than a paternity test.
Daniel had included a legal declaration from Catherine Cole.
Ethan’s mother.
She had written it shortly before her death.
Marco Moretti is Ethan’s biological father.
Richard knows.
Richard has threatened to destroy me if I reveal it.
I allowed Richard to raise Ethan because I was afraid.
If Ethan ever learns the truth, tell him this.
He was not born from betrayal.
He was born from a mistake between two frightened people, and none of that was his fault.
Ethan’s hands shook.
He read the last line repeatedly.
Then another page fell from the envelope.
A forensic comparison.
Blood recovered from Elise Bennett’s passenger window.
Richard Cole.
99.97 percent match.
The last DNA envelope proved Richard had been in my mother’s car.
Combined with the payment to Samuel Keene, it was enough to reopen the death investigation.
Ethan stared at his father’s name.
“This sends him to prison.”
“If prosecutors prove conspiracy,” Amelia said.
“He’ll say the crash was accidental.”
“Then the ledger and payments will speak.”
Ethan stood.
“Release it.”
I looked at him.
He swallowed.
“All of it.”
“You understand what happens to your inheritance claim?”
“Yes.”
“If the restitution case succeeds, part of Marco’s estate could become tied up for years.”
“I don’t care.”
Luka watched him.
Ethan continued.
“I spent my life choosing money over people.”
He looked at Sophie sleeping across the room.
“I’m done.”
It was the first choice he had made since the hospital that did not benefit him.
It did not repair what he had done.
But it was a beginning.
Amelia transmitted the evidence to federal prosecutors.
Three hours later, arrest warrants were issued.
One for Richard Cole.
One for Vanessa Carter.
And one for Adriana Moretti.
But Adriana had disappeared.
Then Luka received a photograph on his phone.
Sophie’s nurse lay unconscious on the floor of my father’s house.
The bassinet beside her was empty.
My heart stopped.
Across the bottom of the image was one sentence.

BRING M-17 ALONE.
My daughter was gone.
