Chapter 13 - THE MONEY BENEATH THE MONEY

The account contained $620 million.
Or it had once.
The money had moved through seventeen shell companies across thirty years.
Daniel Bennett had traced all of them.
So had my mother.
Richard claimed the original funds came from illegal kickbacks arranged by Carlo Moretti.
Luka did not deny his uncle had been corrupt.
But Richard had helped move the money.
“Then you stole from a thief,” Luka said.
Richard smiled bitterly.
“And your father built an empire around it.”
“No.”
“Marco knew eventually.”
“When?”
“After Ethan was born.”
Luka’s face tightened.
Richard turned toward me.
“Your mother wanted to expose everyone.”
“Including Marco?”
“Yes.”
“And my father?”
“Daniel agreed.”
I finally understood why my parents had disappeared from the Moretti world.
They weren’t hiding only from Richard.
They had been protecting evidence that could destroy several powerful families.
“Why didn’t they go public?”
“Because you were born.”
Richard’s voice softened.
“Elise changed after she had you.”
“She became afraid.”
“She became a mother.”
I looked away.
Sophie’s face flashed through my mind.
I understood my mother more deeply in that moment than I had in twenty-five years.
Truth mattered.
But a child changed the price you were willing to pay for it.
Luka found the final M-17 ledger behind a false panel inside the archive cabinet.
My mother’s handwriting filled the margins.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
At the bottom of the last page was a sentence.
THE MONEY MUST RETURN TO THE PEOPLE IT WAS TAKEN FROM.
Not to me.
Not to Luka.
Not to Ethan.
To employees.
Pension funds.
Small investors.
Families whose savings had been stripped away decades earlier.
My mother had not built a hidden fortune.
She had built restitution.
Amelia reviewed the ledger.
“If authenticated, this could trigger federal investigations.”
Richard sat silently.
Ethan stared at him.
“Is this why you tried to liquidate Mara’s trust?”
Richard nodded.
“I needed enough capital to cover the old transfers before regulators found them.”
“You were going to steal from my wife.”
“To save the company you now own.”
Ethan laughed.
“You transferred it to me because you knew it was poisoned.”
Richard said nothing.
The son finally saw the father clearly.
Not as protector.
Not as hero.
As a man willing to let his own child absorb the explosion.
Ethan stepped back.
“I spent my whole life trying to become you.”
Richard’s face tightened.
“I know.”
“That may be the cruelest thing you ever did to me.”
No one spoke.
Luka handed the ledger to Amelia.
“Copy everything.”
Richard suddenly looked toward me.
“There’s still one thing Daniel never understood.”
I froze.
“What?”
“The fake paternity test wasn’t my idea.”
My eyes moved to Ethan.
He shook his head.
“Not mine either.”
“Then whose?”
Richard gave one name.
“Vanessa Carter.”
I stared at him.
“She worked for Ethan.”
Richard shook his head.
“She worked for me.”
The room went cold.
“And before she worked for me…”
May you like
He paused.
“She worked for Carlo Moretti’s daughter.”
