Chapter 16 - THE PATERNITY LIE

The new test proved Ethan was Sophie’s biological father.
99.999 percent.
There was no ambiguity.
No mistake.
No excuse.
I read the result once.
Then set it down.
Luka remained silent.
Amelia asked, “Do you want Ethan notified through counsel?”
“No.”
I called him myself.
He answered immediately.
“Mara?”
“The result came back.”
Silence.
“She’s yours.”
I heard him inhale sharply.
Then nothing.
“Ethan?”
His voice broke.
“I knew.”
That surprised me.
“What?”
“I had Northbridge run the real sample after I found out the first report was fake.”
“When?”
“The morning she was born.”
The anger returned.
“So you knew with certainty.”
“Yes.”
“And still walked away.”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
There are truths so cruel they stop hurting because the mind cannot absorb them all at once.
“You looked at your daughter knowing she was yours.”
“Yes.”
“You let Vanessa walk beside you.”
“Yes.”
“You told me to call when I could think clearly.”
His breath caught.
“Mara—”
I ended the call.
There was nothing else to say.
An hour later, Ethan appeared at the front gate.
He did not demand entry.
He stood in the rain.
Luka looked through the window.
“Your call.”
I went outside.
Ethan looked worse than before.
“I’m not here to ask you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
“I’m here because I found something.”
He held out a flash drive.
“Richard kept an encrypted backup.”
“Of what?”
“Northbridge.”
Amelia copied the drive before anyone opened it.
Inside were years of altered DNA records.
Paternity tests.
Inheritance disputes.
Custody cases.
Executives.
Politicians.
Wealthy families.
Richard had built an entire blackmail operation around genetic secrets.
M-17 was only one thread.
Then we found a folder labeled BENNETT.
Inside was a video.
My father.
Daniel Bennett sat in the exact study where I now stood.
He looked thin.
Sick.
But his eyes were sharp.
“Mara, if you see this, then Sophie exists.”
I covered my mouth.
He had known I might someday have a daughter?
Then he smiled faintly.
“Or perhaps a son.”
I almost laughed through my tears.
Of course.
He hadn’t known.
He had simply imagined my future.
“If your child’s birth activated the trust, then you have probably met Luka.”
Luka looked away.
Dad continued.
“I know his appearance may alarm you.”
Despite everything, I laughed.
Luka muttered, “Fair.”
Then Dad became serious.
“Do not confuse protection with ownership.”
I stared at the screen.
“Anyone who loves you should increase your choices, not reduce them.”
The words hit me harder than anything else.
Ethan lowered his head.
My father had just described my entire marriage.
Daniel continued.
“The last envelope contains evidence I could never decide whether to release.”
My heartbeat accelerated.
“It does not belong to you alone.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“It belongs to Ethan too.”
Ethan raised his head.
Dad’s next words silenced us.
“Richard Cole did not merely steal Ethan from Marco Moretti.”
“He altered the circumstances of Ethan’s birth.”
“And if Richard’s version becomes public before the DNA evidence, Ethan may be blamed for something he never chose.”
The video ended.
I stared at the LAST envelope.
Ethan whispered, “What could I possibly be blamed for?”
Luka looked suddenly grim.
“An inheritance.”
“What inheritance?”
May you like
Luka stared at the old DNA envelope.
“My father’s.”
