Chapter 1 - The Camera Never Lied

Mark’s voice cut through the grand foyer like a blade.

“What did you just do to my son?”

Victoria froze.

Her hand was still raised.

Elena stood between her and five-year-old Liam, one arm wrapped protectively around the trembling boy.

A red mark was already forming across Elena’s cheek where Victoria had struck her seconds earlier.

Liam buried his face against Elena’s uniform.

“Daddy.”

His voice was barely louder than a breath.

Mark crossed the marble floor so quickly that Victoria instinctively stepped backward.

“Mark, thank God you’re here.”

She pressed a hand against her chest.

“She attacked me.”

Elena said nothing.

She simply held Liam tighter.

Victoria pointed at her.

“I was trying to discipline Liam because he was throwing a tantrum.”

Mark’s expression did not change.

“I saw everything.”

Victoria blinked.

“What?”

“The security cameras.”

The color drained from her face.

Mark had installed new cameras two weeks earlier after several valuables mysteriously disappeared from the west wing.

Victoria had complained that they made the house feel like a prison.

Mark had ignored her.

Now he understood why she had hated them.

“I saw you grab him.”

Mark’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“I saw you shove him against the wall.”

Victoria’s lips parted.

“And I saw Elena step between you.”

“That isn’t what happened.”

“I watched it live.”

Victoria stared at him.

For the first time since Mark had known her, she had no immediate lie prepared.

Liam suddenly clutched Elena’s sleeve harder.

Mark noticed.

He crouched in front of his son.

“Liam.”

The boy refused to look up.

Mark swallowed.

“Buddy, look at me.”

Slowly, Liam raised his face.

There were tears on his cheeks.

But something else broke Mark’s heart even more.

Fear.

Not fear of a stranger.

Not fear caused by one frightening moment.

This was practiced fear.

The kind a child learned after expecting something bad to happen again.

Mark touched Liam’s shoulder gently.

“Has Victoria done this before?”

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Mark, don’t interrogate him.”

Mark turned.

“Stay where you are.”

Something in his voice stopped her.

Liam looked toward Victoria.

She stared back at him.

That single glance told Mark more than any confession could.

Liam lowered his eyes.

“She said you wouldn’t believe me.”

Mark felt his stomach turn.

Victoria laughed nervously.

“He’s five.”

Liam flinched at the sound.

Elena’s face hardened.

Mark noticed that too.

“What else did she say?”

Liam whispered.

“She said if I told you, Elena would disappear.”

The room became silent.

Victoria’s face changed.

Not panic this time.

Calculation.

Mark slowly stood.

He took his phone from his pocket.

“Security.”

Victoria moved toward him.

“Mark, please.”

He raised one hand.

“Lock every exterior gate.”

Victoria stopped.

Mark continued.

“No one leaves the property.”

Her expression twisted.

“You cannot imprison me here.”

“I’m protecting my son while I determine exactly what happened in my house.”

Victoria’s eyes flashed.

“This is my home too.”

Mark stared at her.

“No.”

He looked around the mansion.

“It never was.”

Victoria’s composure cracked.

She turned toward Elena.

“This is because of her.”

Elena finally spoke.

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“This is because you thought a child would stay afraid forever.”

Victoria lunged toward her.

Mark stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Two security officers entered the foyer.

Mark pointed toward the sitting room.

“Take Victoria there.”

Victoria stared at him in disbelief.

“You’re choosing a servant over your future wife?”

Mark looked down at Liam.

His son’s hands were still shaking.

“I’m choosing my child.”

The guards escorted Victoria away.

She did not scream.

She did not fight.

Instead, she looked back over her shoulder at Elena.

Her expression was cold.

Almost confident.

And that frightened Elena more than rage would have.

Mark carried Liam upstairs.

Elena followed.

Halfway up the staircase, Liam whispered something into her ear.

Elena stopped walking.

Mark turned.

“What did he say?”

Elena looked at Liam.

The boy shook his head desperately.

Mark came closer.

“Elena.”

Her voice dropped.

“He says there’s something hidden under his bed.”

Mark stared at his son.

“What?”

Liam began crying again.

“She told me never to touch it.”

Mark carried him into his bedroom.

Elena locked the door behind them.

Mark knelt and reached beneath Liam’s bed.

His fingers touched something hard.

He pulled out a small black leather case.

The case did not belong to a child.

Mark opened it.

Inside were three things.

A bottle of prescription pills.

A miniature voice recorder.

And a photograph of Mark’s late wife, Sarah.

Written across Sarah’s face in black ink were four words.

YOUR MOTHER SHOULD HAVE LISTENED.

Mark stopped breathing.

May you like

Because suddenly, what Victoria had done to Liam no longer looked like cruelty.

It looked like part of something much bigger.
