Chapter 12 - The School File

Julia was arrested outside Liam’s private school.

She carried no weapon.

What she carried was worse.

Documents.

Medical records.

Court forms.

A prepared emergency guardianship petition.

Victoria’s name appeared as proposed temporary guardian.

Mark’s name appeared beneath an allegation of domestic abuse.

Liam’s fake recorded statements were attached.

So were reports written by Aaron Bell.

Everything was ready.

All they had needed was an emergency.

Something that made Mark unavailable.

A hospitalization.

An arrest.

Or death.

Detective Shaw placed the forms across the table.

“This operation was much further along than we realized.”

Mark read the petition.

It described him as violent.

Unstable.

Obsessed with work.

Dangerous when drinking.

Half the claims were fabricated.

The other half twisted ordinary moments into something sinister.

A photograph showed Mark carrying Liam from a restaurant while the boy cried.

The caption claimed he was removing the child after a violent confrontation.

In reality, Liam had been sick.

Another showed Mark gripping Victoria’s wrist.

The caption claimed assault.

Mark remembered the moment.

She had nearly fallen down icy steps.

He had caught her.

Every innocent photograph had been converted into evidence.

“They were building a story.”

Elena said it softly.

Detective Shaw nodded.

“And repeating it until a judge might believe it.”

Julia refused to talk.

Patrick Sloan demanded an attorney.

Victoria continued negotiating.

Aaron Bell finally agreed to cooperate fully.

Each person blamed someone else.

But they all pointed toward Robert Crane.

He remained missing.

Then Mark received a call from the Ashford corporate board.

An emergency meeting had been scheduled.

By Robert Crane.

Mark laughed.

“He’s a fugitive.”

Company chairman Helen Brooks responded carefully.

“He sent documents.”

“What documents?”

“Documents alleging you misused corporate funds.”

Mark understood immediately.

Crane was attacking from hiding.

“He’s trying to remove me.”

“The allegations are significant.”

“They’re forged.”

“Then attend the meeting and prove it.”

Mark arrived at headquarters with Detective Shaw nearby.

Reporters already filled the sidewalk.

Someone had leaked everything.

Questions came from every direction.

“Mr. Ashford, did you abuse your son?”

“Did your fiancée flee because of domestic violence?”

“Are you under investigation for financial misconduct?”

Mark ignored them.

Inside the boardroom, Patrick Sloan’s deputy presented a file claiming Mark transferred six million dollars into private accounts.

The signatures looked real.

The authorization codes were valid.

Mark stared at the screen.

Crane had prepared this long ago.

Board members shifted uncomfortably.

Then Elena entered.

Everyone looked at her.

Mark had not expected her.

Neither had Crane’s allies.

Elena carried Sarah’s red ledger.

She placed it on the table.

“This belonged to Sarah Ashford.”

The room went silent.

Helen Brooks opened it.

She began reading.

Transactions.

Dates.

Shell corporations.

Legal approvals.

Robert Crane.

Patrick Sloan.

Rebecca Bell.

Then Elena connected the flash drive.

Sarah’s original records appeared.

Every supposedly stolen dollar attributed to Mark could be traced back to accounts controlled by Crane.

The narrative collapsed in minutes.

Helen looked at Mark.

“You knew about this?”

“Since yesterday.”

“And Sarah knew years ago?”

“Yes.”

The board voted immediately.

Crane was removed from every position.

His access was terminated.

His accounts were frozen pending court orders.

Mark should have felt victory.

Instead, his phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Elena standing outside the headquarters.

Taken seconds earlier.

Then another photograph.

Liam at home.

Mark’s blood turned cold.

The message beneath it contained six words.

YOU TOOK MY COMPANY.

I’LL TAKE YOUR FAMILY.
