Chapter 15 - The Fire at the Foundation

Mark ran toward the warehouse.

Detective Shaw grabbed him.

“You cannot go in there.”

“My son is inside.”

Firefighters were already entering.

Mark fought against every instinct telling him to follow.

Seconds felt like hours.

Then Elena appeared beside him.

Mark stared.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came when David called.”

“Liam is inside.”

Elena looked at the flames.

Her face went white.

“How?”

No one knew.

Security footage later showed a delivery van entering the estate using a valid catering code.

A man dressed as a maintenance worker had taken Liam during a momentary power interruption.

Crane had planned everything.

Mark stared toward the burning doorway.

Then a firefighter emerged.

Carrying a child.

“LIAM!”

Mark ran forward.

Liam was coughing.

Terrified.

But alive.

Mark took him.

“Daddy.”

“I’ve got you.”

“He wanted the key.”

Mark looked at him.

“What key?”

Liam opened his fist.

Sarah’s brass key.

The one Elena had carried.

Elena stared.

“I gave that to David.”

David checked his pocket.

Empty.

Crane had somehow taken it.

But Liam had stolen it back.

“What does it open?” Mark asked.

Elena shook her head.

“I never knew.”

Liam pointed toward the warehouse.

“Blue door.”

Firefighters contained the fire before it destroyed the basement.

Police entered again.

They found Robert Crane near an old steel vault.

The door was painted blue.

He had suffered smoke inhalation.

He was conscious.

And furious.

Officers arrested him.

When Mark saw Crane brought outside in handcuffs, three years of grief nearly overcame him.

Crane looked at Liam.

Then smiled.

“The boy is smarter than his mother.”

Mark moved toward him.

Detective Shaw blocked the path.

Crane continued.

“Sarah could never leave well enough alone.”

Mark stared at him.

“She trusted you.”

“That was her first mistake.”

“You let her die.”

Crane’s smile weakened.

“I didn’t cause the crash.”

“You followed her.”

“Yes.”

“You took the documents.”

“Yes.”

“And you left her there.”

Crane looked away.

That was enough.

Mark’s voice became quiet.

“She was alive.”

Crane said nothing.

“You heard her asking for help.”

Silence.

“You could have called 911.”

Crane finally looked at him.

“And lose everything?”

Mark stared.

There it was.

Not rage.

Not revenge.

Not even hatred.

Greed.

Crane had allowed a woman to die because exposing the truth would cost him money and power.

Mark stepped back.

He suddenly understood something important.

Crane did not deserve Mark’s rage.

He deserved a courtroom.

A sentence.

A locked door.

And a lifetime knowing the empire he tried to steal had survived him.

Police opened the blue vault.

Inside were boxes of contracts.

Account records.

Audio files.

And copies of correspondence going back fifteen years.

Sarah had hidden the evidence there with Mateo Ruiz.

Elena touched her brother’s handwriting on one box.

Her eyes filled.

“He helped her.”

“Yes.”

Mark stood beside her.

“He tried.”

Among the records was evidence that Crane paid someone to supply Mateo with the drugs that caused his death.

Elena sat down.

For years she had wondered whether her brother had relapsed.

Whether he had lied to her.

Whether she should have seen it.

Now she knew the truth.

Mateo had not abandoned his promise to expose Crane.

He had died because he kept it.

Elena closed her eyes.

Mark placed a hand on her shoulder.

Across the warehouse, Detective Shaw opened another box.

Her expression changed.

“Mark.”

He approached.

Inside were copies of guardianship papers.

Victoria’s name appeared.

But beneath her name was another.

Alternate guardian.

Robert Crane.

Mark stared.

If Victoria had failed or disappeared, Crane planned to control Liam directly.

Victoria had never been his partner.

She had been another disposable piece.

Then Shaw found a handwritten instruction.

Once shares transfer, remove Rebecca.

May you like

Mark looked toward the police vehicle holding Victoria miles away.

She had nearly destroyed Liam for a future Crane never intended to let her live long enough to enjoy.
