Chapter 4 - Sarah’s Last Secret

The SUV disappeared before security could block the lower service road.
Someone had opened the emergency gate remotely.
That meant Victoria had help.
Mark returned to the mansion soaked from the rain.
David was waiting inside.
“We checked the gate system.”
“And?”
“The override came from your office.”
Mark stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
“Someone accessed it remotely with an administrator credential.”
“Whose credential?”
David hesitated.
“Yours.”
Mark laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
Victoria had planned this.
Perhaps for months.
Maybe years.
Elena came downstairs after Liam finally fell asleep.
Mark was standing in the library staring at the empty safe.
“What was in the steel box?”
Elena asked.
“Letters.”
“From Sarah?”
“And financial records.”
He rubbed both hands over his face.
“I couldn’t read them after she died.”
Elena said nothing.
“I locked everything away.”
Mark looked toward her.
“I thought grief gave me the right to stop looking.”
Elena’s expression softened.
“You lost your wife.”
“And because I stopped looking, someone came into my home and hurt my child.”
His voice cracked.
Elena stepped closer.
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have.”
“No parent sees every danger.”
Mark stared at the floor.
“Victoria did this while I was sleeping twenty feet away.”
Elena’s voice remained steady.
“Then stop blaming yourself and find out why.”
Those words reached him.
Mark lifted his head.
“Sarah gave you something, didn’t she?”
Elena stiffened.
“You said she was afraid.”
Silence.
“She trusted you.”
Elena slowly nodded.
“She gave me an envelope.”
Mark stared at her.
“Where is it?”
“In a bank deposit box.”
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
“She told me not to.”
Mark stepped forward.
“She was my wife.”
“I know.”
“And Liam is my son.”
“I know that too.”
“Then what did she say?”
Elena looked toward the doorway.
“She said if anything happened to her, I was to wait.”
“For what?”
“For someone to threaten Liam.”
Mark felt his stomach drop.
“She expected this?”
“She expected someone to come after what belonged to him.”
“What belongs to him?”
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
“I don’t know.”
That answer frustrated Mark more than almost anything else.
Then he remembered something.
Sarah’s father had created a private family trust years before Liam was born.
Mark knew it existed.
He had never asked about the terms.
After Sarah died, her attorney told Mark the assets would remain untouched until Liam turned twenty-five.
Mark had assumed that was the end of it.
“What bank?”
Elena told him.
“We go tomorrow.”
“Mark.”
“What?”
“If Victoria knows the envelope exists, she may be waiting.”
“Then she can wait.”
Mark called David.
He doubled security around Liam.
No one slept much that night.
At four in the morning, Mark sat beside his son’s bed.
Liam opened his eyes.
“Daddy?”
“I’m here.”
“Is Elena leaving?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Liam relaxed.
Mark brushed the hair from his forehead.
“Did Victoria ever ask you about Mommy?”
Liam nodded sleepily.
“What did she ask?”
“Where Mommy hid the blue box.”
Mark froze.
“What blue box?”
Liam’s eyes closed again.
“The one Mommy said was mine.”
Mark stared at him.
Sarah had never mentioned a blue box.
But Victoria had known about it.
At seven, Mark and Elena left for the bank.
David rode with them.
The deposit box contained a single sealed envelope.
Across the front was Sarah’s handwriting.
FOR ELENA ONLY.
Mark looked at her.
Elena opened it.
Inside was a letter.
And a small flash drive.
Elena read the first paragraph silently.
Then her hand began to tremble.
Mark saw her face change.
“What?”
She looked up.
“Sarah knew Victoria by another name.”
Mark’s pulse quickened.
“What name?”
Elena turned the letter toward him.
The sentence had been underlined twice.
Victoria Hale is not her real name.
Her name is Rebecca Bell.
Mark stared at the page.
Bell.
The same name as the fake psychologist treating Liam.
And suddenly, they understood.
May you like
Victoria had not simply found a dishonest doctor.
She had brought family into Mark’s home.
