Chapter 1: The Helicopters Over Blackthorn Manor

Chapter 1: The Helicopters Over Blackthorn Manor
The first helicopter appeared less than thirty seconds after I ended the call.
Its rotors chopped through the midnight sky, sending violent gusts across the marble courtyard outside Blackthorn Manor. Crystal windows trembled inside their frames. The ancient oak trees lining the driveway bent beneath the force of the wind.
Nathan frowned.
"What the hell?"
Another helicopter emerged from the darkness.
Then another.
Then another.
Their searchlights swept across the estate like white blades, turning the night into daylight.
The smile on Celeste Monroe's perfectly painted lips finally disappeared.
She stood from the white leather armchair, still holding her champagne glass, and looked toward the ceiling.
"What is this?"
Nathan laughed, though it sounded forced.
"Probably the police."
He glanced at me with the same smug confidence he'd worn all evening.
"I told you, Evelyn. I already handled them."
I didn't answer.
My knees still rested on the cold black marble.
Blood slowly dripped from my torn dress onto the polished floor, each drop leaving a crimson stain that reflected the chandelier above us.
Two hundred lashes.
Every breath burned.
My back felt as though molten iron had been poured beneath my skin.
But the pain no longer mattered.
I listened.
Not to Nathan.
To the sound growing louder outside.
SUV engines.
Dozens of them.
Nathan walked toward the entrance and pulled open the massive front doors.
The sight waiting outside erased every trace of amusement from his face.
A convoy of black armored SUVs rolled through the front gates one after another.
Not five.
Not ten.
At least thirty.
Each vehicle bore no company logo.
No government insignia.
Nothing.
Only matte-black paint that absorbed the light.
Their movements were perfectly synchronized.
Within seconds they formed a precise perimeter around Blackthorn Manor.
Doors opened simultaneously.
More than sixty men stepped out.
Black suits.
Black gloves.
Clear earpieces.
Every movement disciplined.
Every pair of eyes alert.
Not one of them looked at Nathan.
Instead, they looked toward the house.
Toward me.
Nathan descended two steps onto the front terrace.
"You can't be here."
His CEO voice returned.
"This is private property."
No one acknowledged him.
One of the men calmly spoke into his sleeve.
"Primary location secured."
Another answered.
"Medical team ready."
Nathan's expression hardened.
"I'm talking to you!"
Still nothing.
The silence unsettled him far more than an argument would have.
Celeste hurried to his side.
"Nathan..."
Her voice trembled.
"Who are these people?"
"I don't know."
For the first time since I had met him, Nathan sounded uncertain.
One final helicopter descended toward the front lawn.
Unlike the others, this aircraft was entirely black.
No registration number.
No visible markings.
As it landed, every suited man standing in the courtyard straightened simultaneously.
Not one word was spoken.
Yet every person instinctively stood at attention.
Nathan noticed.
"So..."
he muttered.
"Someone important."
The helicopter door opened.
A tall man in his late fifties stepped onto the grass.
Silver hair.
Dark tailored suit.
Calm eyes.
His face carried neither anger nor panic.
Only absolute control.
He walked past Nathan without slowing.
Nathan instinctively moved into his path.
"Excuse me."
The man continued walking.
Nathan raised his voice.
"I said excuse me!"
The stranger finally stopped.
He turned his head only slightly.
His eyes settled on Nathan for perhaps a second.
It wasn't hatred.
It wasn't fear.
It was the same expression someone might give a piece of furniture blocking a hallway.
Then he continued forward.
Nathan stepped aside without even realizing he had done it.
The man entered the grand hall.
His polished shoes echoed softly against the marble floor.
Every member of his security detail remained outside.
Only he walked inside.
Only he approached me.
I recognized him instantly.
Marcus Hale.
My father's chief of security.
He had protected me since I was nine years old.
When I learned to ride horses...
Marcus had run beside me.
When I graduated college...
Marcus stood in the back row, pretending to be another guest.
When I married Nathan...
Marcus had been the last person my father trusted to watch over me from a distance.
For four years...
He obeyed my father's orders.
Never interfere.
Never reveal who we were.
Until I called.
Marcus stopped in front of me.
The moment his eyes saw the wounds across my back, something inside his carefully controlled expression cracked.
He slowly removed his suit jacket.
Without saying a word, he draped it across my shoulders.
The expensive fabric immediately darkened as it absorbed fresh blood.
His jaw tightened.
When he finally spoke, his voice was almost gentle.
"Miss Ashcroft."
The room froze.
Nathan blinked.
"What did you call her?"
Marcus ignored him.
He lowered himself onto one knee before me.
The commander of one of the most elite private security organizations in the world...
Knelt.
Not before a president.
Not before a billionaire.
Before me.
"I apologize," he said quietly.
"We arrived twelve minutes later than planned."
I managed the faintest smile.
"You came."
"We always come."
Behind us, Nathan laughed nervously.
"Okay..."
"I don't know what game this is..."
"But she's Evelyn Ashford."
Marcus slowly stood.
His expression became unreadable once more.
He finally looked directly at Nathan.
"No."
His voice was calm.
"She is Evelyn Ashcroft."
Nathan frowned.
"I've never heard that name."
"You weren't supposed to."
Celeste suddenly interrupted.
"Nathan..."
She stared at Marcus.
"I know him."
Nathan turned.
"What?"
"I've seen him before."
Her face had become almost colorless.
"Three years ago."
"The World Economic Summit in Geneva."
"He was standing behind..."
She stopped speaking.
Marcus offered no reaction.
But Nathan noticed.
"Behind who?"
Celeste swallowed.
"The chairman."
"The one nobody was allowed to approach."
Nathan laughed.
"Impossible."
Marcus answered for her.
"It isn't."
Silence filled the hall.
Outside, more vehicles entered the estate.
Not armored SUVs this time.
Ambulances.
Medical specialists carrying trauma equipment.
No one asked permission.
They moved with practiced efficiency, transforming the entrance hall into an emergency treatment area within moments.
One doctor carefully approached me.
"Miss Ashcroft..."
"May we examine your injuries?"
I nodded.
Nathan stepped forward instinctively.
"You can't just—"
Four security officers moved simultaneously.
Not aggressively.
Simply enough to remind him that he no longer controlled the room.
Nathan stopped walking.
His confidence was beginning to crack.
"This is insane."
He looked directly at me.
"What exactly did you do?"
I met his eyes for the first time since the whipping ended.
"I made one phone call."
Marcus checked his watch.
Then he looked toward the open front doors.
"He'll be here shortly."
Nathan folded his arms.
"Who?"
Marcus answered with complete composure.
"Your father-in-law."
Nathan scoffed.
"My father-in-law ran a tiny accounting office."
"No."
Marcus's eyes never left his.
"That was merely one of the companies."
Nathan's smile vanished.
The wind outside suddenly intensified.
Headlights appeared beyond the front gates.
Not ordinary headlights.
A motorcade.
Long.
Perfectly aligned.
Escorted by motorcycle outriders.
Vehicle after vehicle entered Blackthorn Manor as every member of the security team snapped to attention.
Even Marcus straightened his posture.
Nathan looked from the convoy...
To me...
Then back toward the gates.
For the first time that night...
Fear entered his eyes.
Marcus spoke only six quiet words.
"The Chairman has arrived, Miss Ashcroft."
May you like
And somewhere deep inside Blackthorn Manor, Nathan Ashford finally realized that the woman he had spent four years humiliating...
Was someone he had never truly known.
