Chapter 4: Frozen Accounts

Chapter 4: Frozen Accounts
Nathan had always believed that money solved every problem.
Money bought loyalty.
Money bought silence.
Money bought time.
By sunrise, he learned the one lesson every arrogant man eventually faced.
Money could disappear.
Nathan's phone vibrated again.
Then again.
Then again.
The notifications refused to stop.
He looked down, expecting another frantic message from one of his executives.
Instead, the screen displayed only five words.
ACCOUNT TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED.
His brow furrowed.
"What?"
He opened his banking app.
A loading symbol spun across the screen before a red warning appeared.
Access Denied. Contact Your Relationship Manager.
Nathan frowned harder.
"There has to be a mistake."
He opened another account.
The same message.
Another bank.
The same result.
Then another.
Every account.
Frozen.
His breathing became uneven.
"No..."
"No, no, no..."
Across the room, Marcus Hale glanced at his tablet without expression.
"First wave complete."
Richard Ashcroft simply nodded.
Nathan immediately dialed his Chief Financial Officer.
The call connected on the first ring.
"Michael."
"Tell me what's happening."
Silence answered.
Then a tired voice.
"They froze everything."
Nathan's heartbeat accelerated.
"What do you mean everything?"
"Our operating accounts."
"Our payroll accounts."
"Our international credit facilities."
"Our investment portfolios."
Nathan forced a laugh.
"Impossible."
"They can't freeze private accounts without a court order."
Michael inhaled shakily.
"They already have one."
Nathan's face drained of color.
"What court?"
"Federal."
The word echoed through the enormous hall.
Nathan slowly lowered the phone.
Celeste stared at him.
"What did he say?"
Nathan ignored her.
He dialed another number.
His personal banker.
Voicemail.
Another bank.
Voicemail.
His private wealth manager.
Disconnected.
One after another...
Every door that had always opened for Nathan Ashford suddenly closed.
Meanwhile, Evelyn sat quietly while a trauma surgeon carefully disinfected the deep wounds across her back.
Every touch burned like fire.
The doctor spoke softly.
"You've lost a dangerous amount of blood."
"I recommend immediate surgery."
Evelyn nodded.
"In a moment."
She wasn't finished watching.
For four years...
Nathan had watched her suffer.
Today...
She would watch him.
A young attorney hurried toward Richard carrying a leather portfolio.
"Chairman."
"The emergency injunctions have all been approved."
Richard accepted the folder.
"Report."
"All domestic banking institutions have complied."
"International partners are cooperating."
"The Financial Crimes Task Force has acknowledged receipt of the evidence."
"The Internal Revenue Service has opened a parallel investigation."
Marcus added calmly,
"The Securities Commission suspended trading pending disclosure."
Nathan looked between them.
"You planned this."
Richard answered honestly.
"No."
"You planned it."
Nathan frowned.
"What?"
"You believed you were untouchable."
"You simply gave us enough evidence."
Suddenly...
Nathan's phone rang again.
This time he answered instantly.
"David."
His lead corporate attorney spoke before Nathan could ask a question.
"Nathan."
"Listen carefully."
"The Board of Directors has called an emergency meeting."
Nathan exhaled in relief.
"Good."
"We'll stop this."
David remained silent.
Then he quietly said,
"They're voting to remove you."
Nathan laughed.
"They can't."
"I own the company."
"No."
"You own twenty-two percent."
Nathan's smile disappeared.
"What?"
"There was an overnight acquisition."
Nathan stared at Richard.
"...Who bought the shares?"
David hesitated.
"The Ashcroft Family Trust."
Nathan's knees almost buckled.
"That's impossible."
"They purchased voting rights through eight separate investment funds."
"The transaction was legal."
"They now control fifty-six percent."
Nathan whispered,
"When?"
David answered.
"About four hours ago."
Celeste grabbed Nathan's arm.
"They can't destroy us this quickly."
Nathan yanked his arm away.
"Stop saying 'us.'"
She blinked.
"What?"
He looked at her with growing frustration.
"This happened because of you."
"My fault?"
"You told me Evelyn was helpless."
"You said she had no family."
"You said she was finished."
Celeste's voice sharpened.
"Don't blame me."
"You were the one holding the whip."
Silence exploded across the hall.
Nathan stared at her.
Celeste realized what she'd said.
Too late.
Marcus quietly looked toward one of the legal assistants.
"Please note the statement."
The assistant typed without looking up.
Outside...
Television news vans began arriving beyond the estate gates.
Word spread faster than anyone expected.
Helicopters from national media outlets hovered alongside Richard's aircraft.
Reporters crowded against police barricades.
No one knew exactly what had happened.
Only that something catastrophic was unfolding inside Blackthorn Manor.
One reporter spoke into her microphone.
"Sources tell us multiple federal agencies are involved."
"Neither Ashford Global nor the Ashcroft Family Office has issued a public statement."
"But financial markets are already reacting."
Inside the mansion...
Nathan received another alert.
ASHFORD GLOBAL STOCK DOWN 18%
Five seconds later—
DOWN 24%
Then—
TRADING HALTED
Nathan stared blankly at the screen.
His company had taken him twenty years to build.
Twenty years of eighteen-hour workdays.
Twenty years of ambition.
Twenty years of ruthless decisions.
It was collapsing before breakfast.
Richard walked slowly toward the enormous portrait hanging above the fireplace.
It showed Nathan and Evelyn on their wedding day.
Nathan wore a confident smile.
Evelyn looked genuinely happy.
Richard studied the painting for several seconds.
Then he quietly asked,
"Do you remember your vows?"
Nathan remained silent.
Richard answered for him.
"'To protect.'"
"'To honor.'"
"'In sickness and in health.'"
He turned.
"Instead..."
"You tortured the woman who trusted you most."
Nathan clenched his fists.
"I lost control."
Richard's eyes became ice.
"No."
"You revealed your character."
Marcus's earpiece buzzed.
He listened for a moment before nodding.
"The overseas offices have responded."
Richard looked at him.
"Status?"
"Singapore suspended contracts."
"London terminated financing."
"Dubai canceled shipping agreements."
"Tokyo withdrew investment."
"Frankfurt froze pending negotiations."
Each sentence struck Nathan harder than the last.
Years of international relationships...
Gone.
In less than an hour.
Nathan slowly walked toward Evelyn.
For the first time since she had entered his life...
His confidence had disappeared.
"Evelyn..."
She looked at him calmly.
"I know you're angry."
"But don't do this."
"We can fix it."
She held his gaze.
"Fix what?"
"Our marriage."
"Our company."
"Our future."
A faint smile appeared on her face.
"You still don't understand."
Nathan frowned.
"Understand what?"
She stood carefully despite the pain.
The doctors instinctively moved to support her, but she shook her head.
Step by painful step...
She walked until only a few feet separated them.
Her voice remained quiet.
"The company was never ours."
Nathan stared at her.
"The mansion was never yours."
Another step.
"The money was never yours."
One final step.
"And my forgiveness..."
She looked directly into his terrified eyes.
"...was never something you deserved."
Nathan opened his mouth.
No words came out.
Behind him, Marcus's phone vibrated.
He checked the message before looking at Richard.
"The Board has finished voting."
Richard nodded once.
"And?"
Marcus looked directly at Nathan.
"They've unanimously removed Nathan Ashford as Chief Executive Officer."
The words echoed through the silent hall.
Nathan stood motionless.
Outside, reporters shouted questions beyond the gates.
Inside...

The empire he had believed would last forever had officially slipped out of his hands.
And Richard Ashcroft had only just begun his revenge.
