Chapter 14: The Traitor at the Family Table

Chapter 14: The Traitor at the Family Table
The conference room fell into absolute silence.
No one blinked.
No one breathed.
Every pair of eyes remained fixed on the enhanced image frozen across the enormous screen.
Richard Ashcroft stood motionless.
His face, usually unreadable even during billion-dollar negotiations, betrayed something no one in the room had ever witnessed.
Shock.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Betrayal.
Marcus Hale slowly stepped beside him.
"Chairman..."
Richard never answered.
His eyes remained locked on the passenger sitting beside Adrian Cross.
Finally...
He whispered one name.
"Edward."
The room froze.
Nathan frowned.
"Edward who?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"Edward Lawson."
"My chairman's chief legal adviser."
The words echoed through the conference room.
For twenty-three years...
Edward Lawson had served the Ashcroft family.
He attended every board meeting.
Every shareholder conference.
Every Christmas dinner.
He had even stood beside Richard during Evelyn's wedding.
Richard had trusted him with wills...
Corporate mergers...
Family trusts...
Everything.
Nathan stared at the screen.
"You're saying..."
"Your own lawyer betrayed you?"
Richard slowly nodded.
"It appears so."
Within minutes...
Federal agents began compiling Edward Lawson's records.
His employment history appeared spotless.
No criminal record.
No suspicious transactions.
No unusual travel.
Nothing.
Too perfect.
Marcus frowned.
"No one lives this clean."
Richard looked toward him.
"What are we missing?"
Marcus answered without hesitation.
"We're looking at the wrong man."
He turned to the forensic accountants.
"Search every transaction involving Edward's family."
The analysts immediately went to work.
Ten minutes later...
One of them suddenly raised his hand.
"I found something."
Everyone looked up.
Edward himself had never accepted illegal payments.
His daughter had.
Millions of dollars.
Transferred into a biotechnology startup she supposedly founded three years earlier.
The company had no employees.
No products.
No revenue.
Only funding.
The money traced back through six shell corporations.
The final source...
Adrian Cross.
Richard slowly closed his eyes.
"He bought Edward through his family."
Nathan leaned back in disbelief.
"So Edward fed him information..."
Marcus nodded.
"For years."
"Board votes."
"Investment plans."
"Security procedures."
"Everything."
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"I thought I was the smartest man in every room."
Richard looked directly at him.
"You weren't even the smartest pawn."
Across the room...
The FBI tactical commander received another update.
"We've located Edward Lawson."
Marcus immediately stood.
"Where?"
"His office."
"Has he been arrested?"
The commander hesitated.
"No."
"Because..."
He looked down at the report.
"He's dead."
Silence.
"What happened?"
The commander swallowed.
"Single gunshot wound."
"Estimated time of death..."
He checked the report.
"...less than forty-five minutes ago."
Richard slowly sat down.
"He knew too much."
Marcus nodded.
"Cross is cleaning the board."
The investigation immediately shifted.
Edward's office was sealed.
Forensic teams searched every cabinet.
Every computer.
Every safe.
Most of the files had already been erased remotely.
But one drawer remained locked.
Inside...
They found an old leather notebook.
Unlike digital files...
Paper couldn't be hacked.
The notebook contained handwritten meeting notes stretching back almost two decades.
Dates.
Names.
Private conversations.
Every confidential discussion Richard had ever trusted Edward to handle.
Then...
Near the final pages...
Marcus found something unexpected.
A photograph.
It had clearly been taken from a distance.
Richard.
His late wife.
Ten-year-old Evelyn.
Standing outside a small lakeside cabin.
Richard's expression darkened.
"No..."
Marcus looked at him.
"You know this place?"
Richard nodded slowly.
"Only five people knew where that cabin was."
He counted quietly.
"My wife."
"My daughter."
"Myself."
"Marcus."
"And Edward."
Nathan looked confused.
"What cabin?"
Richard answered without taking his eyes off the photograph.
"The safest place my family ever had."
Another page followed.
A handwritten note.
Edward's handwriting.
Cross doesn't want Richard's money.
Below it...
Another sentence.
He wants Richard to suffer exactly the way he did.
Marcus frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Richard remained silent.
His face had become pale.
He already knew.
The prosecutor noticed.
"Chairman..."
"What aren't you telling us?"
Richard took a long breath.
"Twenty-seven years ago..."
"The government offered me immunity."
"In exchange..."
"I testified."
He looked toward the window.
"The syndicate lost everything."
"Their leaders went to prison."
"Their families were destroyed."
He paused.
"Adrian Cross lost his wife."
"His son."
"And his entire fortune."
Nathan frowned.
"So this..."
Richard nodded.
"...was revenge."
Marcus's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Marcus Hale."
His expression changed within seconds.
"What?"
Everyone looked toward him.
"The hospital."
Richard stood.
"What happened?"
Marcus's voice became urgent.
"Someone entered Evelyn's recovery room."
The room exploded into motion.
Federal agents grabbed their radios.
The FBI commander shouted orders.
"Lock down the entire hospital!"
Marcus was already running toward the exit.
Richard followed.
So did I.
Nathan instinctively stood.
"I’m coming."
Two agents immediately blocked his path.
"No."
He looked toward me desperately.
"Evelyn!"
I turned once.
"What?"
His eyes filled with genuine regret.
"Please..."
"Don't let him hurt you again."
I looked at the man I had once loved.
The man who had destroyed our marriage.
The man whose choices had shattered countless lives.
Then I answered calmly.
"He never hurt me."
Nathan frowned.
"What?"
"He only used you."
Those words broke whatever remained inside Nathan Ashford.
As Marcus, Richard, and the federal agents rushed toward the elevators, another call came through the tactical commander's radio.
He stopped running.
His face turned white.
Marcus immediately noticed.
"What is it?"
The commander slowly lowered the radio.
"The intruder..."
He looked directly at Richard.
"...didn't go there to kill Evelyn."
Silence.
Richard's heartbeat thundered in his ears.
"Then why?"
The commander answered four chilling words.
"He took your granddaughter."
The world seemed to stop.
Richard stared at him in disbelief.
"My..."
"...granddaughter?"
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"My baby..."
I whispered.
"What baby?"
No one understood.
Not even Nathan.
Because six months earlier...
Everyone had believed our child had died.
But someone...
May you like
Had just stolen a little girl who wasn't supposed to exist.
