Chapter 7: The Boardroom Betrayal

Chapter 7: The Boardroom Betrayal
The words echoed through Blackthorn Manor.
"We found evidence of an unexplained death."
No one spoke.
Not even the federal agents.
Nathan's face had gone completely white.
His lips moved, but no sound came out.
I watched him carefully from the medical bed.
For the first time in four years...
I wasn't looking at an arrogant CEO.
I was looking at a frightened man desperately calculating which secret had finally caught up to him.
Richard noticed it too.
He didn't ask Nathan another question.
He simply turned to Marcus.
"Continue."
Marcus nodded.
"Our forensic team will handle the homicide evidence."
He paused.
"But first..."
He glanced at his watch.
"...there's another matter that can't wait."
Nathan frowned.
"What matter?"
Marcus looked directly at him.
"The Board of Directors is expecting you."
An hour later...
For the first time that morning, Nathan was allowed to leave Blackthorn Manor.
Not because he was free.
Because the federal agents wanted him exactly where he believed he still had power.
Ashford Global Headquarters towered above downtown Manhattan, its mirrored glass reflecting the bright morning sun.
Just yesterday, employees had admired the building as a symbol of success.
Today...
News helicopters circled overhead.
Television crews crowded the entrance.
Electronic billboards flashed breaking headlines.
ASHFORD GLOBAL CEO UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION
EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING UNDERWAY
Employees whispered nervously as Nathan entered the lobby.
Some looked away.
Others openly stared.
No one greeted him.
No one smiled.
The security guard who had saluted him every morning simply nodded.
Nathan felt the difference immediately.
Respect had vanished overnight.
The executive boardroom occupied the top floor.
A room Nathan himself had designed.
Floor-to-ceiling windows.
A thirty-foot walnut conference table.
Leather chairs imported from Italy.
A portrait of himself hung on the far wall.
He had once joked that it looked presidential.
Now...
It looked ridiculous.
When the elevator doors opened, twenty-three directors were already seated.
Not one person stood to welcome him.
Nathan forced confidence into his voice.
"Good morning."
Silence.
He walked toward the head of the table.
His chair.
The CEO's chair.
Before he could sit...
A calm voice interrupted.
"I wouldn't."
Nathan looked up.
The speaker was Harold Bennett.
The oldest independent director.
He had helped mentor Nathan twenty years earlier.
"What do you mean?"
Harold folded his hands.
"It no longer belongs to you."
Nathan laughed.
"Let's stop the theatrics."
"I'm still Chief Executive Officer."
Another board member quietly slid a folder across the table.
Nathan opened it.
Inside lay the official voting record.
Resolution 17-A
Removal of Nathan Ashford as Chief Executive Officer
Votes in Favor: 23
Votes Opposed: 0
Nathan stared at the page.
"No."
"This isn't legal."
Harold sighed.
"It is."
"You lost controlling interest this morning."
Nathan slammed both hands on the table.
"To who?"
The conference room doors opened.
Everyone stood.
Not because Nathan had entered.
Because Richard Ashcroft walked inside.
Beside him...
I entered slowly with Marcus supporting me.
My injuries were hidden beneath a dark tailored coat.
Every step hurt.
But I refused to miss this moment.
Nathan looked at me in disbelief.
"You came?"
I met his eyes.
"I helped build this company."
"I deserve to watch the truth."
Richard calmly took the seat opposite Nathan.
Not the CEO's chair.
He didn't need titles.
Power recognized itself.
Harold cleared his throat.
"Mr. Ashford."
"I'd like to introduce the majority shareholder."
Nathan frowned.
"What?"
Harold turned toward me.
"Miss Evelyn Ashcroft."
Nathan laughed.
"This is absurd."
"She owns nothing."
Richard slid another document across the table.
Nathan opened it.
His hands began shaking.
Every page carried legal certifications.
Trust agreements.
Investment records.
Share purchase authorizations.
For years...
Ashford Global hadn't grown because Nathan was a financial genius.
It had grown because anonymous investment funds had quietly rescued it whenever it approached disaster.
Those funds belonged to one owner.
The Ashcroft Family Trust.
And according to the trust documents...
The beneficiary controlling those shares...
Was me.
Nathan looked up slowly.
"You..."
I nodded.
"I've been your largest investor since six months before our wedding."
His eyes widened.
"No..."
"You never told me."
"You never asked."
Silence filled the boardroom.
One director finally spoke.
"Mrs. Ash—"
I interrupted gently.
"No."
"My name is Evelyn Ashcroft."
"It always has been."
Nathan looked as though someone had punched him in the chest.
Harold continued the meeting.
"Item Two."
"Election of Interim Chair."
Another unanimous vote.
Harold smiled toward me.
"Congratulations."
"You are now Chairwoman of Ashford Global Holdings."
Nathan stood so suddenly that his chair crashed backward.
"This company is mine!"
"I built it!"
My voice remained calm.
"No."
"You managed it."
"I financed it."
Richard added quietly,
"And when it was failing..."
"My family saved it."
Marcus tapped the remote.
The giant screen behind us lit up.
A financial timeline appeared.
Year One.
Emergency capital injection.
Confidential investor.
Year Two.
Debt restructuring.
Confidential investor.
Year Three.
Acquisition bailout.
Confidential investor.
Year Four.
International expansion.
Confidential investor.
Each "confidential investor" carried the same hidden identity.
Ashcroft Family Trust.
Nathan stared at the screen in disbelief.
Every major success of his career...
Had been quietly funded by the family he mocked.
One board member leaned forward.
"We always assumed Mr. Ashford knew."
I smiled sadly.
"He didn't."
"That was my father's condition."
Richard nodded.
"I wanted to know whether your husband would become successful..."
"...or simply become arrogant."
Nathan whispered,
"So none of this..."
"...was really mine."
"No," Richard answered.
"It was entrusted to you."
"And you abused that trust."
Before Nathan could respond, the boardroom doors opened once more.
Two federal agents entered.
One carried a sealed envelope.
The lead agent spoke clearly enough for everyone to hear.
"Nathan Ashford."
"You are hereby served with a federal order prohibiting the destruction of corporate records or communication with company employees regarding the ongoing investigation."
The room fell silent again.
Nathan accepted the envelope with trembling hands.
His empire was gone.
His authority was gone.
Even his employees no longer looked to him for direction.
As the agents stepped aside, Marcus received another message through his earpiece.
He listened without changing expression.
Richard noticed.
"What is it?"
Marcus looked toward him.
"The forensic team identified the victim connected to the unexplained death."
Nathan slowly closed his eyes.
He already knew.
Marcus spoke four words that froze the room.
"It was our accountant."
Nathan's eyes flew open.
For the first time since the nightmare began...
The boardroom wasn't wondering whether Nathan Ashford had committed financial crimes.
May you like
They were beginning to wonder...
Whether those crimes had been committed to cover up a murder.
