Chapter 10 - Thirty-One Million Dollars

The company Ryan had spent ten years pretending to build into an empire was drowning.

Aaron sent us documents throughout the night.

Loans.

Side agreements.

Emergency financing.

Personal guarantees.

Ryan had borrowed against future company revenue to fund expansion projects that never became profitable.

Then he borrowed again to cover the first debt.

The sale was not a victory.

It was an escape.

If it closed, Ryan could pay his creditors, walk away with several million dollars, and leave the trust holding worthless obligations nobody had disclosed.

I sat beside the hotel window as sunrise appeared over Dallas.

“How did nobody see this?”

Dad answered.

“Because people often see what they benefit from believing.”

Thomas wanted to believe his son had saved the family company.

Diane wanted to believe Ryan was brilliant.

I wanted to believe my husband loved me.

We had all ignored different warning signs.

At 7:05 a.m., Ryan called again.

This time I answered.

“Emily.”

He sounded exhausted.

“We need to talk.”

“I’m listening.”

“Alone.”

“No.”

He sighed.

“Charles is sitting there, isn’t he?”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

“For six years, you made sure my father wasn’t sitting anywhere near me.”

Silence.

Then he changed tactics.

“Fine.”

“I lied about the email.”

My heart tightened even though I already knew.

“I took the letters.”

“I should not have.”

“And the money?”

“I was going to replace it.”

“More than nine hundred thousand dollars?”

Another silence.

“Ryan?”

“The company needed liquidity.”

“You stole from me.”

“I borrowed from our future.”

I almost laughed.

“Did our future include forging my signature?”

His voice sharpened.

“You do not understand what happens if this deal collapses.”

“Then explain.”

“People lose jobs.”

“My parents lose everything.”

“Lily’s future changes.”

There it was.

A threat disguised as concern.

“Do not use our daughter.”

“I’m being realistic.”

“No.”

I looked at Dad.

“You’re being afraid.”

Ryan became quiet.

Then he whispered, “You think Charles is rescuing you?”

I said nothing.

“Ask him why he really invested in Bennett Development.”

I looked at Dad.

Ryan continued.

“Ask him what he knew about me before we got married.”

Then the call ended.

Dad’s face told me there was an answer I wasn’t going to like.

“What did you know?”

May you like

He took a long breath.

“That Ryan had approached me before you ever asked for the investment.”
