Chapter 9 - The Anonymous Recording

The recording lasted three minutes and forty-two seconds.

I listened to every second.

Ryan and Diane were discussing the sale.

My name appeared seven times.

Dad’s appeared four.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

Diane said, “You should have cut Charles out permanently when you had the chance.”

Ryan answered.

“I did.”

My hands started shaking.

Naomi replayed the final twenty seconds.

There was a third voice.

Thomas.

“I don’t want to know how you get Emily’s approval.”

Ryan replied.

“Then don’t ask.”

Thomas said nothing else.

I stared at the speaker.

Dad looked at me.

“You don’t have to make decisions tonight.”

“Yes, I do.”

Everyone looked at me.

“For twelve years, everybody has been making decisions around me.”

I pointed toward the phone.

“Ryan decided what I could know.”

“Diane decided what I deserved.”

“Thomas decided not to ask questions.”

“Even you decided silence was the respectful thing.”

Dad lowered his eyes.

I took a breath.

“That ends now.”

I looked at Naomi.

“Who sent the recording?”

“We don’t know.”

The email had been routed through an encrypted service.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man spoke.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Aaron Pike.”

I knew the name.

Ryan’s chief financial officer.

“I sent the recording.”

“Why?”

He exhaled.

“Because I’m done helping your husband lie.”

Naomi leaned closer.

I put the call on speaker.

Aaron continued.

“Ryan asked me to create internal reports showing your trust distributions as company loans.”

“Were they loans?”

“No.”

“Did he know?”

“Yes.”

My heart pounded.

“What else?”

Aaron hesitated.

“A lot.”

“Tell me.”

“He moved money through three shell vendors.”

“He backdated board resolutions.”

“And last month he ordered me to prepare closing schedules that classified the Whitmore trust as a passive minority holder.”

Naomi said, “It owns fifty-two percent.”

“I know.”

“Why would the buyer accept that?”

“They wouldn’t if they knew.”

Dad’s expression darkened.

Aaron continued.

“That’s why Ryan needed Emily’s signature.”

I asked the question that had been growing inside me.

“Why is he so desperate to close?”

May you like

Aaron was silent for several seconds.

Then he said, “Because Ryan personally guaranteed thirty-one million dollars in debt nobody in his family knows exists.”
