Chapter 19 - My Mother’s Trust

I did not go alone.
Ryan should have known better.
Dad, Naomi, Thomas, and two security officers came with me.
The Bennett house looked different in daylight.
Smaller somehow.
Maybe houses built on secrets always did.
Diane opened the door.
Her confidence was gone.
“Ryan is in the study.”
Dad asked, “Where are the files?”
“With him.”
“Why did you call Emily?”
Diane looked at me.
“Because he scared me.”
It was the first honest thing I had ever heard her say.
We entered the study.
Ryan sat behind Thomas’s desk.
A metal document case rested in front of him.
He looked exhausted.
“Full family reunion.”
I remained near the door.
“What’s in the case?”
“Your mother’s trust agreement.”
Dad stepped forward.
“You stole that from Northstar’s archive.”
Ryan smiled.
“Borrowed.”
Naomi said, “Ryan, investigators are already reviewing the transfers.”
He shrugged.
“I paid creditors.”
“You moved seven million to Silver Mesa.”
His smile disappeared.
I understood.
“That was your escape money.”
He said nothing.
I looked at the case.
“Why does my mother’s trust matter?”
Ryan laughed.
“Because Charles never told you everything.”
Dad looked at me.
“He’s right.”
Ryan seemed surprised.
Dad continued.
“Your mother created the trust.”
“I knew that.”
“Not the reason.”
Dad took a breath.
“Your mother grew up watching her mother lose everything after becoming financially dependent on a violent husband.”
The room became quiet.
“She promised herself that if she had a daughter, that daughter would never be trapped because someone controlled the money.”
My eyes filled.
Mom had died when I was twenty-three.
She never met Lily.
Dad continued.
“The trust was designed so no spouse could directly own or pledge its core assets.”
“That’s why Ryan needed my signature.”
“Yes.”
Ryan snapped.
“I never wanted her money.”
I looked at him.
“You stole nine hundred thousand dollars.”
“For the company.”
“You forged my name.”
“To protect the company.”
“You isolated me from my father.”
“To protect our marriage.”
“You manufactured a video of me.”
“To save everything we built.”
Every answer was the same.
Ryan had renamed control until it sounded like love.
I walked closer.
“You threw a plate at me.”
His face changed.
For once, he had no explanation.
I held out my hand.
“Give me the case.”
“No.”
Dad spoke.
“It cannot save you.”
Ryan looked at him.
“You think this is about the files?”
Then he opened the case.
It was empty.
Naomi’s expression sharpened.
“Where are they?”
Ryan smiled.
“Somewhere nobody will find them.”
My phone vibrated.
Aaron.
I answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Emily, we found Silver Mesa.”
“What do you mean?”
“It isn’t Ryan’s.”
I looked at Diane.
She had gone completely pale.
May you like
Aaron continued.
“Silver Mesa belongs to Diane.”
