Chapter 18 - The False Victory

Ryan walked out of the boardroom before anyone could stop him.
Naomi immediately contacted the bank.
Aaron called internal compliance.
Dad called his own financial investigators.
The transfer had been split across eight accounts.
Some belonged to lenders.
Others belonged to companies none of us recognized.
At first, it looked as though Ryan had escaped with the money.
Diane followed him out.
Thomas stayed.
He sank into a chair.
“What has he done?”
Aaron stared at the transaction log.
“He accelerated the debt payments.”
Naomi asked, “All of them?”
“Not exactly.”
Several legitimate creditors had been paid.
That explained twenty-four million.
The remaining seven million had gone to an entity registered in Nevada.
Silver Mesa Consulting.
I recognized the name from nowhere.
Dad did.
“That company approached Northstar five years ago.”
“For what?”
“A private acquisition.”
“Of Bennett Development?”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“Of your trust distribution rights.”
I felt cold.
Someone had tried to buy the future income from my trust five years earlier.
Dad refused.
Naomi searched corporate records.
The beneficial owner was hidden behind multiple entities.
Then Aaron found an old invoice.
Silver Mesa had received consulting payments from Bennett Development for years.
More than two million dollars.
“Ryan owns it,” I said.
Dad nodded.
“Or controls it.”
My phone buzzed.
A photograph from Ryan.
He was standing beside a private aircraft.
The caption read.
You should have taken the deal.
Then another message.
Tell Lily I love her.
My chest tightened.
Dad immediately called airport security.
Naomi contacted investigators.
But Ryan wasn’t fleeing the country.
The aircraft belonged to a lender.
The photograph was old.
He had sent it to make us look in the wrong place.
Then Lily called from the hotel suite where she was staying with Dad’s security team.
“Mom?”
“What happened?”
“Grandma Diane is downstairs.”
My heart stopped.
“Do not go near her.”
“I didn’t.”
“She gave the front desk an envelope for you.”
Naomi and I returned immediately.
Inside the envelope was a handwritten note from Diane.
You wanted the truth.
Come to the house.
Alone.
Naomi read it.
“No.”
I agreed.
Then I turned the page over.
There was another sentence.
Ryan is here.
And he has the original trust files Charles has been searching for since your mother died.
Dad went completely still.
I looked at him.
“What original files?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
May you like
Then he said the words I had never expected.
“The documents that explain why the trust was created in the first place.”
