Chapter 12 - The Marriage He Had Already Left

I wanted to know how long Daniel had been planning to leave me.
Sofía told me the answer mattered less than the evidence.
Emotionally, she was wrong.
It mattered.
I had spent months believing we were tired.
Busy.
Disconnected.
Daniel had spent those same months building an exit plan financed by my salary.
The private investigator's report was forty-six pages.
It documented fourteen workdays.
Three client dinners.
One weekend campaign event.
Two airport arrivals.
Photographs showed me carrying luggage.
Talking to male colleagues.
Getting into company cars.
Nothing inappropriate.
But the captions were designed to sound suspicious.
SUBJECT ENTERS HOTEL AT 9:42 P.M.
The hotel was hosting our conference.
SUBJECT SEEN EMBRACING UNKNOWN MALE.
The unknown male was my sixty-one-year-old creative director congratulating me after a presentation.
Daniel didn't need truth.
He needed a story.
A selfish wife.
An absent mother.
A possibly unfaithful woman.
Then Sofía found the invoice date.
Daniel hired the investigator three days after I refused to co-sign a business loan for Valeria.
I remembered the argument.
Daniel told me family supported family.
I told him Valeria's boutique had already failed twice.
He called me cold.
Apparently, that was the night he decided to prepare for war.
That afternoon, Valeria called me.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
“What?”
She sounded different.
No arrogance.
No dramatic anger.
Just fear.
“I need to talk to you without Daniel knowing.”
“Why?”
“Because I'm in trouble too.”
I laughed.
“You stole Rosa's salary for six months.”
“I know.”
“You used my card.”
“I know.”
“You watched your mother punish Camila.”
Silence.
Then she whispered.
“I know.”
I wanted to hang up.
Then she said.
“Daniel is blaming everything on us.”
I stopped.
“He told his lawyer he never knew Mom was taking money.”
“That won't work.”
“He says I created the CVO transfers.”
“Did you?”
“Some.”
Her voice shook.
“But not all.”
I sat down.
“What do you want?”
“To show you something.”
“Send it to my attorney.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because if Daniel finds out I have it, he'll destroy the rest.”
I looked toward Camila, sleeping on the hotel bed.
“What is it?”
Valeria lowered her voice.
“A recording.”
May you like
“Of what?”
“The night he practiced your signature.”
