Chapter 6 - The Husband Who Heard Everything

The video did not show Daniel.
It didn't need to.
His voice was unmistakable.
“Mom, just give her something before Mariana calls.”
Carmen answered from the kitchen.
“She already ate.”
Then Camila's small voice.
“No, Grandma.”
Daniel laughed.
Not cruelly.
That somehow made it worse.
Casually.
As if none of it mattered.
“Don't argue with Grandma.”
The video ended.
For three minutes, nobody spoke.
Rosa wiped her face.
Sofía copied the file.
Then the next one.
And the next.
There were eleven recordings.
Seven photographs.
Three voice notes.
One picture showed Camila asleep on the sofa at 11:30 at night because Carmen had hosted friends in her bedroom.
Another showed a plate of untouched chicken beside a note written by Carmen.
NO SWEETS UNTIL SHE STOPS CRYING FOR MOMMY.
I thought I was going to be sick.
Sofía closed the folder.
“This changes the custody case.”
Rosa looked frightened.
“Will I have to testify?”
“Possibly.”
Carmen had fired her.
Daniel had helped.
Then someone had continued collecting her salary.
We traced the account.
It belonged to Valeria.
That discovery took less than an hour.
Every month, 12,000 pesos labeled HOUSEHOLD STAFF had been transferred from my account directly into Valeria's personal bank account.
Sofía leaned back.
“So we have misrepresentation, diversion of household money, and potential financial misconduct within the divorce proceedings.”
I almost laughed.
Potential.
That word felt too polite.
At five that afternoon, Daniel finally reached me from a new number.
“You're destroying my parents.”
“No.”
“You canceled Dad's medical payment.”
“I paid his pharmacy directly this morning.”
Silence.
Daniel had expected me to cut off his father's medication.
He had planned to use it against me.
“I know about Rosa.”
Another silence.
Longer this time.
“Who talked to you?”
“That matters more than what happened?”
“You don't understand the situation.”
“I saw the videos.”
His breathing changed.
“Mariana.”
“Were you in the kitchen?”
“Listen to me.”
“Were you there?”
“My mother was trying to help.”
The words entered my body like ice.
Not denying.
Defending.
I hung up.
Thirty seconds later, a message arrived.
If you use those videos in court, this gets ugly for everyone.
I forwarded it to Sofía.
She called immediately.
“Do not delete that.”
“I won't.”
Then she added quietly.
“And Mariana?”
“Yes?”
“Check your work email.”
I opened my laptop.
There were seventeen unread messages.
The first was from my managing partner.
URGENT.
The second was from Human Resources.
CONFIDENTIAL COMPLAINT RECEIVED.
Daniel had contacted my company.

He wasn't just fighting for our marriage anymore.
He was trying to destroy the job that had paid for his entire life.
