Chapter 17 - We Stopped Defending and Started Attacking

Until that point, I had been reacting.

Daniel threatened my job.

We responded.

Carmen smeared me online.

We responded.

Daniel manipulated visitation.

We responded.

Sofía decided that was over.

“We stop playing defense.”

The next week became a storm of documents.

We submitted the hallway footage.

The store footage.

The forged-signature analysis.

The family group messages.

The private investigator invoice.

The diverted nanny salary.

The CVO Holdings transfers.

The attempt to privately sell the apartment.

The messages coaching Camila.

Then my employer's legal department provided Daniel's false accusations against me and the client.

For the first time, Daniel had to explain himself.

His story changed immediately.

He claimed Carmen controlled household finances.

Then bank records showed he made the transfers.

He claimed he never knew Camila was punished outside.

Then the hallway footage showed him looking directly through the balcony door.

He claimed he believed the apartment refinancing was authorized.

Then Valeria's video showed him practicing my signature.

He claimed the private investigator was hired because he suspected infidelity.

Then messages showed the investigation began immediately after I refused to fund Valeria.

Every lie required another lie.

Every new lie created another contradiction.

Then investigators traced the missing CVO money.

It had not gone to Cuernavaca.

It had gone to Daniel.

Specifically, to a brokerage account he had hidden from me.

He had lost nearly 300,000 pesos trading leveraged investments.

The house had been a lie.

The loan had been an attempt to replace the money before Carmen discovered it.

Suddenly, even Carmen turned on him.

Roberto forwarded me her messages.

YOU TOLD ME THE HOUSE WAS RESERVED.

WHERE IS MY MONEY?

Daniel responded.

IT WAS NEVER YOUR MONEY.

That sentence ended whatever loyalty remained between them.

Valeria contacted Sofía the next morning.

“I'll testify.”

Carmen's attorney called two hours later.

She wanted to discuss “cooperation.”

Sofía laughed after hanging up.

“They're eating each other.”

I didn't feel satisfied.

I thought I would.

Instead, I felt tired.

That evening, Camila and I made grilled cheese sandwiches.

She ate half.

Then she wrapped the other half in a napkin.

My heart tightened.

“You can leave it on the plate.”

She looked nervous.

“For tomorrow?”

“There will be more tomorrow.”

She stared at me.

“Promise?”

I forced my voice not to break.

“I promise.”

May you like

For the first time, she left the food behind.

That tiny sandwich felt more important than every legal victory combined.
