Chapter 19 - The Day Everyone Finally Spoke

The courtroom was smaller than I expected.
No dramatic gallery.
No reporters.
Just fluorescent lights, wood panels, attorneys, papers, and people whose lives were being reduced to evidence.
Daniel sat across from me.
Carmen sat behind him.
Valeria sat on the opposite side.
They did not look at each other.
That told me more than anything.
Sofía began with the balcony footage.
The judge watched in silence.
Carmen leading Camila outside.
Valeria delivering the bread.
Daniel looking through the glass.
Me arriving.
Me carrying my daughter inside.
Then came the financial records.
The forged signature.
The hidden account.
The false nanny salary.
The investigator.
The attempted apartment sale.
Daniel's attorney objected repeatedly.
Some objections succeeded.
Most did not.
Then Valeria testified.
She admitted taking my money.
She admitted knowing Carmen punished Camila.
She admitted filming Daniel practicing my signature.
“Why are you telling the truth now?” Sofía asked.
Valeria looked at Daniel.
“Because he said everything was my fault.”
It wasn't noble.
But it was useful.
Roberto testified next.
He cried.
Then Rosa entered.
Daniel turned.
For the first time that day, his expression truly changed.
Rosa had decided to come.
She described the balcony punishments.
The withheld food.
The threats.
The day she was fired.
Then Sofía played the recording of Daniel and Carmen discussing me as a source of money.
Daniel stared at the table.
Finally, Carmen testified.
Her attorney tried to keep her answers narrow.
It didn't work.
Sofía asked.
“Did you intentionally purchase stale bread for Camila on the evening Mariana returned?”
Carmen's jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To teach discipline.”
“Was there other food available?”
“Yes.”
“Lobster?”
“Yes.”
“Shrimp?”
“Yes.”
“Chicken?”
“Yes.”
“Fruit?”
“Yes.”
“And you chose stale bread?”
Carmen looked at me.
“She was spoiled.”
The judge's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But everyone saw it.
Then came the final question.
“Did Daniel know Camila was outside?”
Carmen hesitated.
Daniel looked at her.
That was his mistake.
Carmen saw the fear.
And something inside her snapped.
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Carmen continued before anyone asked.
“He knew everything.”
The room went silent.
“He knew about the money.”
Her voice rose.
“The loan.”
Daniel's attorney stood.
“The witness should answer only the question asked.”
But Carmen was no longer protecting him.
“He told me Mariana would never leave because she was too busy feeling guilty.”
I stared at Daniel.
May you like
He finally looked at me.
And for the first time since the balcony, he had nothing left to say.
