Chapter 14 - WHEN HE FINALLY SAW IT

My husband asked to see the full banquet video again.

Not through his attorney.

Not in court.

Alone.

I sent nothing directly.

My attorney arranged for him to receive the preserved copy through counsel.

Two days later, he called during his scheduled conversation.

Our daughter had already spoken to him briefly.

She told him about coloring a purple dog.

She showed him her stuffed rabbit.

Then she wandered away.

He remained on the screen.

“Can I ask you something?”

“What?”

“Did she say anything after you left that night?”

I knew exactly who he meant.

“Our daughter?”

He nodded.

I swallowed.

“She touched her cheek and said, ‘Grandma mad.’”

His face changed.

He looked away from the camera.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered, “I didn’t hear her crying after you left.”

“She didn’t cry immediately.”

He pressed his lips together.

“I watched the whole video.”

“I know.”

“I saw myself.”

I did not rescue him from the silence.

He continued.

“I was sitting there.”

“Yes.”

“I saw Mom grab her wrist.”

“Yes.”

“I saw everything.”

“Yes.”

His eyes filled, but I refused to confuse regret with repair.

“I don’t know why I didn’t move.”

“I do.”

He looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because keeping your mother calm has been more important to you than protecting anyone she hurts.”

He flinched.

I continued.

“You did it to your sister.”

His face went pale.

“You did it to me.”

He looked down.

“And then you did it to your daughter.”

He whispered, “I never wanted that.”

“Intent does not erase what happened.”

He nodded slowly.

Then he said something I never expected.

“My mother asked me to lie.”

I stared at him.

“When?”

“After you left the banquet.”

“About what?”

“She told me to say I didn’t see her touch our daughter.”

My heart started pounding.

“What did you say?”

“I said there were videos.”

“And?”

“She said family would support me.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“Did you agree?”

He took too long to answer.

That told me enough.

Finally, he said, “At first.”

I ended the call soon afterward.

That night, I cried for the first time since the banquet.

May you like

Not because I wanted him back.

Because I finally understood how close I had come to staying with a man who might have helped erase what happened to his own child.
