Chapter 16 - THE HOUSE WHERE DANIEL BEGAN

The abandoned house outside Cedar Falls had belonged to Jason’s mother.
Or Daniel’s mother.
At that point even saying his name felt complicated.
Daniel Cross had become Jason Miller because Jason Miller was useful.
The man underneath both names had spent years changing identities whenever consequences came too close.
Police reached the house before sunrise.
The windows were boarded.
The yard was overgrown.
No vehicle was visible.
But smoke rose faintly from the chimney.
Someone was inside.
Alvarez coordinated the operation.
I knew almost nothing until afterward.
Officers surrounded the property.
They called Jason’s name.
No response.
They called Daniel Cross.
A curtain moved.
That was enough.
Police knew he was inside.
Negotiators began talking to him from outside.
For almost an hour, nothing happened.
Then Jason answered through the door.
He claimed Sarah had framed him.
He claimed Cole had stolen the money.
He claimed Emily was confused.
He claimed everyone else was lying.
It was exactly what Sarah expected.
“He always changes the story when the first one stops working.”
She said.
Police continued talking.
Meanwhile, investigators discovered footprints leading away from the rear porch.
A second person might have been inside.
Officers followed them.
They found a backpack hidden near the woods.
Inside were cash, food, and another passport.
Jason had prepared an escape route.
But officers were already positioned behind the property.
His exits were gone.
At 7:21 a.m., the front door finally opened.
Jason walked outside.
His hands were visible.
Police arrested him without anyone being injured.
When Alvarez called me, I did not celebrate.
I simply sat down.
Sarah covered her face.
Emily looked between us.
“Is it over?”
I wanted to say yes.
But arrests do not erase fear.
They do not return lost days.
They do not automatically repair trust.
Still, one part was over.
“He can’t come here.”
I told her.
“He can’t lock you anywhere.”
“He can’t take Mom?”
“No.”
Emily looked at Sarah.
Then she finally seemed to breathe fully.
That afternoon, Jason was formally charged with multiple crimes.
The investigation expanded across several states.
Federal prosecutors became involved.
Previous victims were contacted.
Financial records were seized.
Properties were frozen.
The man who had spent years hiding behind names suddenly had nowhere left to hide.
Then Alvarez called again.
“There’s one more thing.”
“What?”
“We searched the Cedar Falls house.”
“And?”
“We found a locked cabinet.”
My stomach tightened.
“What was inside?”
“Records.”
“Of what?”
Alvarez paused.
“Every family he targeted.”
There were thirty-two files.

Sarah had not uncovered the whole operation.
She had uncovered only the beginning.
