Chapter 1 – The Homecoming

The kitchen fell silent.
The only sound was the slow drip of filthy water from the overturned bucket.
Staff Sergeant Ethan Brooks stood frozen in the doorway, his combat boots still dusty from the military transport that had brought him home twelve hours ahead of schedule.
He had imagined this moment a hundred different ways during deployment.
His wife running into his arms.
His mother crying with happiness.
A warm meal waiting on the table.
Instead...
He found his seventy-year-old mother lying on the kitchen floor, her silver hair soaked, her trembling hands trying to wipe dirty water from her face.
His wife, Victoria, still held the bucket.
"Ethan..." she whispered.
"I can explain."
He never looked at her.
He dropped to his knees beside his mother.
"Mom..."
Margaret forced herself to smile.
"I didn't want you to come home to this."
He gently touched the bruise forming across her cheek.
It wasn't fresh.
Neither were the fading bruises on her wrists.
His training taught him to notice details.
Those bruises told a story.
This had been happening for weeks.
Maybe months.
Ethan stood.
His voice was so calm it frightened everyone in the room.
"Who put their hands on my mother?"
Victoria laughed nervously.
"She fell."
Ethan slowly pointed toward the ceiling.
"The cameras."
Every drop of color disappeared from Victoria's face.
She had forgotten that before deploying, Ethan had upgraded the entire house with cloud-based security cameras so he could check on his mother while overseas.
Every hallway.
Every entrance.
May you like
Every common room.
Nothing had been erased.
