One year later, sunlight poured through the kitchen windows.
The same white kitchen.
The same polished floors.
But everything felt different.
Margaret laughed while teaching neighborhood children how to bake her famous apple pie.
Fresh flowers sat where the bucket once had.
Fear had been replaced by peace.
After leaving the military, Ethan accepted a position training young recruits.
During his first speech, he told them,
"People think courage only exists on the battlefield."
"They're wrong."
"Sometimes courage is protecting the person who spent their whole life protecting you."
That evening, he returned home.
Margaret stood on the back porch watching the sunset.
"You finally look happy," Ethan said.
She smiled.
"I finally feel safe."
He wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
Above the front door hung a wooden sign Ethan had carved by hand after returning home.
THIS HOUSE STANDS ON LOVE, HONOR, AND TRUTH.
Visitors admired the beautiful home without ever knowing the pain it had witnessed.
But Margaret never forgot.
Neither did Ethan.
Because he learned that serving your country is an honorable duty.
