Chapter 4 – Honor Means More Than a Uniform
The courtroom overflowed with veterans, neighbors, and members of the community.
Margaret took the witness stand with quiet dignity.
"I didn't stay silent because I was weak," she testified.
"I stayed silent because I thought families were supposed to forgive."
The prosecutor nodded.
"And now?"
She looked toward Ethan.
"My son taught me something soldiers already know."
"Some battles have to be fought."
The jury deliberated less than three hours.
Victoria was found guilty of elder abuse, assault, attempted fraud, forgery, and coercion.
As deputies led her away, she looked toward Ethan.
"I loved you."
He met her gaze.
"No."
"You loved what you thought you could take."
