Chapter 2 – The Truth Stored in the Cloud

Within twenty minutes, local detectives sat in the living room reviewing security footage.

The first video showed Victoria shouting at Margaret because breakfast wasn't ready.

The second showed her throwing medication into the trash.

The third revealed her locking the refrigerator and hiding the keys.

Then came today's recording.

Victoria slapped Margaret.

Forced her onto the floor.

Placed the bucket beside her.

"Drink it."

"Your son signed everything over."

"You have nothing now."

The detective quietly paused the video.

"Ma'am," he asked Victoria, "would you like to change your statement?"

She stared silently at the screen.

Ethan watched every second without blinking.

Each recording tore apart another memory of the woman he thought he had married.

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"I kept quiet because I didn't want you distracted while you were deployed."

Ethan swallowed hard.

"You protected me."

"I should have been protecting you."

Before sunset, detectives arrested Victoria on suspicion of elder abuse, assault, unlawful coercion, and financial fraud.

As officers escorted her outside, neighbors gathered quietly across the street.

Victoria looked back one last time.

"Ethan, tell them this is a misunderstanding."

He answered without raising his voice.

May you like

"No."

"It's finally being understood."
