Chapter 12 - Peter’s Confession

Peter told us Eleanor had never died.

She lived under another identity.

Elizabeth Crane.

A respected billionaire philanthropist.

Her face had changed through cosmetic surgery.

Her public history had been carefully manufactured.

Elizabeth Crane appeared on television beside presidents.

She donated to universities.

She funded hospitals.

She spoke about integrity, justice, and opportunity.

All while controlling a criminal network through charities and shell corporations.

Peter had served her for years.

“Why?”

I asked.

“Because she raised me to believe loyalty was survival.”

He looked at Vanessa.

“And because she threatened my daughter.”

Vanessa turned away.

Peter admitted he had handed her the envelope.

Victor ordered him to do it.

He wore the baseball cap so cameras would not identify him easily.

Inside the envelope were photographs of Vanessa meeting one of her lenders, financial records showing her debts, and instructions.

Plant the necklace.

Call security.

Make sure Grace is arrested.

“Why the necklace?”

“Because its value guaranteed a felony charge.”

Vanessa began crying again.

Peter reached toward her.

She stepped back.

“You used me.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“You could have told me.”

“I was a coward.”

The honesty hurt more than an excuse.

Then Peter looked at me.

“Eleanor knew about Samuel.”

“Did she order his death?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

The room disappeared around me.

I had known.

But hearing the word made it real.

Peter continued.

“She also ordered Charles Harrington’s death.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“How?”

“Medication was switched before his heart attack.”

Margaret began shaking.

She had spent eight years believing her husband died naturally.

Peter told us Richard Sloan arranged both deaths.

And Eleanor had one rule.

Nobody who threatened the network was allowed to survive.

Detective Monroe asked where Eleanor was.

Peter looked at the black ledger.

“She will come for that herself.”

“Where?”

“Tomorrow night.”

“Why tomorrow?”

Peter pulled a phone from his pocket.

A message had arrived from Eleanor.

It contained an address.

Crane Foundation Annual Benefit.

More than six hundred guests would attend.

Senators.

Judges.

Billionaires.

Media executives.

And Eleanor herself.

Beneath the invitation was a personal message.

Bring Grace.

It is time my daughter learned why I gave her away.
