Chapter 4 - Box 317

The key led us to a private vault company in Manhattan.

Daniel insisted on coming.

Detective Monroe allowed it because the vault was registered jointly under Samuel Bennett and Harrington Properties.

I wanted Daniel beside me.

I also feared what we might discover about his family.

Box 317 was much larger than I expected.

Inside were accounting ledgers, flash drives, photocopied contracts, and photographs.

Daniel picked up the first ledger.

His face turned pale.

“What is this?”

The Harrington Foundation received hundreds of millions of dollars every year for hospitals, schools, shelters, and disaster relief.

According to Samuel’s records, nearly forty million dollars had been diverted through shell companies.

The money eventually disappeared into private investment accounts.

Daniel whispered.

“My mother would never allow this.”

Detective Monroe did not respond.

I found a photograph beneath the files.

Samuel stood beside Charles Harrington, Daniel’s late father.

The picture had been taken months before Charles died.

On the back, Samuel had written one sentence.

Charles knows everything.

Daniel saw it.

“My father knew Samuel?”

“Apparently.”

We found another envelope.

Inside was a copy of Charles Harrington’s private journal.

One passage had been marked.

Richard is stealing from the foundation, but Victor is protecting him.

Margaret refuses to believe me.

If I move too early, Daniel and Ethan could become targets.

Daniel read it twice.

Richard Sloan.

Victor Hale.

Two of the five people with silver crests.

Then Detective Monroe opened the final folder.

Inside was a photograph taken through a restaurant window.

Samuel was sitting across from Richard Sloan.

Beside Richard sat Victor Hale.

The date was eight days before Samuel died.

On the table between them was a white envelope.

Exactly like the envelope Vanessa had received.

Daniel’s phone rang.

It was Ethan.

Daniel answered.

His brother sounded frantic.

“Where are you?”

“At a bank.”

“You need to come home.”

“Why?”

There was a pause.

“Mom is gone.”

Daniel stared at me.

“What do you mean gone?”

“Someone took her.”

Then Ethan said something that made every person in the vault room stop breathing.

“They left another message.”

May you like

“What message?”

“Bring us Box 317 by midnight, or Margaret dies.”
