Chapter 16 - Charles Harrington’s Sin

Margaret admitted Charles had helped create the network.

Not because he wanted to steal charity money.

Because he wanted political influence.

Thirty years earlier, Charles and Eleanor used foundation donations to gain access to powerful people.

At first, the favors seemed harmless.

Permits.

Meetings.

Introductions.

Then Eleanor began demanding more.

Judges.

Police.

Contracts.

Cover-ups.

Charles tried to stop it.

By then, the system was too powerful.

“He spent the last ten years of his life trying to destroy what he helped build.”

Margaret whispered.

Daniel looked devastated.

“My father wasn’t innocent.”

“No.”

“But he tried to fix it.”

“Yes.”

Richard laughed.

“Everyone becomes noble after they lose control.”

I looked at him.

“And what are you?”

His smile disappeared.

“I survived.”

“No.”

“You murdered people because powerful women told you to.”

Richard raised his weapon toward me.

“You sound like Samuel.”

“Good.”

His hand tightened.

Then Margaret stood.

Richard turned.

That second was enough.

Daniel tackled him.

The weapon slid across the floor.

Detective Monroe rushed forward.

Richard struck Daniel.

Ethan appeared in the doorway and kicked the weapon away.

Richard grabbed a fireplace poker.

I saw his eyes move toward Margaret.

I stepped between them.

He swung.

Daniel caught his arm.

Monroe forced Richard to the ground.

Seconds later, handcuffs locked around his wrists.

It was over.

At least inside that room.

Richard Sloan was arrested.

Margaret survived.

Ethan survived.

Daniel survived.

So did I.

But Richard’s final statement remained with me.

Eleanor inherited the network.

That meant someone might eventually inherit it from her.

We returned to New York.

Federal arrests began before noon.

Three judges resigned.

Two police commanders were suspended.

A senator announced his retirement.

More names followed.

The Harrington Foundation froze every account connected to the scheme.

For the first time, sunlight reached a system that had survived in darkness for three decades.

Then Detective Monroe called me.

“We found something in Eleanor’s private safe.”

“What?”

“A list.”

“What kind of list?”

“Successors.”

My heart sank.

“Who is first?”

There was silence.

Then Monroe said a name I never expected.

“Vanessa Cole.”
