Chapter 7 - The Crash

Marcus shoved me down.
The SUV slammed into the surveillance van.
Metal screamed.
Glass exploded.
I struck the floor.
For several seconds, I could hear nothing except ringing.
Then Marcus pulled me through the rear doors.
The black SUV reversed.
A masked driver accelerated again.
Detective Monroe fired toward the tires.
The SUV turned sharply and disappeared behind the warehouse.
Police later found it burning two miles away.
The driver was gone.
Victor Hale was arrested.
Richard Sloan escaped.
Ethan survived.
Margaret was rescued.
It should have felt like a victory.
Instead, the situation became more dangerous.
Victor refused to speak.
Ethan asked for immunity.
And Richard disappeared.
At the hospital, Ethan finally told us why he joined them.
Five years earlier, he had discovered secret payments moving through his investment company.
Victor told him Charles had created the network.
Ethan believed him.
Victor showed him documents proving Charles had used charity money to buy political influence.
All forged.
By the time Ethan learned the truth, he had already signed contracts linking himself to millions of stolen dollars.
He became trapped.
âWhy kidnap Mom?â
Daniel asked.
Ethan looked ashamed.
âRichard said they only needed the box.â
âYou put a gun against her.â
âIt wasnât loaded.â
Margaret slapped him.
The sound echoed through the hospital room.
I did not blame her.
Then Ethan told us something worse.
Richard Sloan was not the highest person in the organization.
âHe takes orders from someone called the Chairman.â
Daniel frowned.
âWho?â
âNobody knows.â
Ethan looked at me.
âBut Samuel did.â
My stomach twisted.
âHow?â
âBefore he died, Samuel told Victor he had seen the Chairmanâs face.â
âWhat did Samuel call him?â
Ethan hesitated.
âHe didnât say him.â
The room became still.
âHe said her.â
Margaret slowly sat down.
Daniel looked at his mother.
For the first time, suspicion entered his eyes.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
GRACE, YOU HAVE TWENTY-FOUR HOURS.
ASK MARGARET WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR HUSBAND ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2019.
May you like
I looked at Margaret.
Her face had gone white.
