Chapter 10 - Her Mother’s Final Warning

The video began with Celeste Laurent sitting alone inside an office.
Khloe covered her mouth.
Nine years disappeared instantly.
Her mother looked tired.
But strong.
Behind her were the lights of Manhattan.
Celeste looked directly into the camera.
“Khloe.”
“If you are watching this, then Damian Thorne has done exactly what I feared.”
Khloe felt Vincent stiffen beside her.
Marcus had returned and stood near the back wall.
Nobody moved.
Celeste continued.
“Damian believes control is something inherited by men and tolerated in women.”
“He will use reputation.”
“Marriage.”
“Fear.”
“And if necessary, your own uncertainty against you.”
Khloe’s eyes filled.
Celeste explained the trust.
Thirty-one percent of Thorne Global.
Three board seats.
Voting control over several Laurent entities.
Then came the part none of them expected.
“The trust does not transfer because you turn thirty-five.”
Rebecca paused the video.
Khloe frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Rebecca handed her another document.
“The birthday provision was a decoy.”
Marcus stared.
“A decoy?”
Rebecca nodded.
“Celeste expected attempts to manipulate the succession.”
“The actual transfer condition is different.”
Khloe read the paragraph.
Her breath caught.
The trust transferred when Khloe demonstrated independent control over her personal and financial affairs after a qualifying challenge.
“What qualifies?”
Rebecca looked at the hospital room.
“This.”
Vincent almost laughed in disbelief.
“The incapacity challenge triggered the real succession.”
“Yes.”
Damian’s attempt to take the trust had done the opposite.
It had accelerated Khloe’s ownership.
Rebecca continued.
“As of the moment the incapacity petition was filed, the trust entered final review.”
“If Khloe is found capable, all voting authority transfers immediately.”
“Not Monday?”
“No.”
“Tomorrow?”
Rebecca smiled.
“Tonight.”
Marcus stared at Khloe.
Vincent slowly sat down.
Khloe looked back at the screen.
Her mother continued speaking.
“One more thing.”
“If Marcus is standing beside you when you watch this, do not judge him by whether he made mistakes.”
“Judge him by whether he told you the truth before he was forced to.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Khloe felt the words cut through the room.
Celeste could not have known Isabella.
She could not have predicted the affair.
But she understood the Thorne family.
She understood secrecy.
She understood men who confessed only after evidence removed every alternative.
The video continued.
“If he hides the truth until the truth becomes unavoidable, he is not your partner.”
“He is protecting himself.”
Marcus quietly left the room.
Khloe did not stop him.
Rebecca closed the laptop.
“There is one more condition.”
Khloe looked at her.
“To assume immediate voting control, you must appoint your three board representatives before midnight.”
It was 10:47 p.m.
Khloe had seventy-three minutes.
“Who can I appoint?”
“Anyone legally eligible.”
Vincent straightened.
“Your mother left recommendations.”
“No.”
Khloe’s answer came instantly.
Everyone looked at her.
“My entire life has been other people making decisions because they believed I wasn’t ready.”
“That ends tonight.”
Rebecca smiled.
“Then choose.”
Khloe picked up a pen.
Her first appointment was Rebecca Sloan.
A lawyer who had protected her mother’s intentions for nine years.
Her second was Dr. Naomi Bell, the independent director who had repeatedly challenged Damian’s governance practices.
Then Khloe paused at the third line.
Vincent expected his name.
Marcus probably would have expected his own once.
Khloe wrote another.
Elaine Parker.
Vincent stared at her.
“The event coordinator?”
Khloe nodded.
“She made a terrible choice.”
“She took Damian’s money.”
“But tonight, when lying would have been easier, she told us the truth.”
“She will not hold the seat permanently.”
“But tomorrow, Damian will understand something.”
“What?”
Khloe signed the document.
“That loyalty bought through fear is weaker than loyalty earned through accountability.”
Rebecca checked the clock.
11:13 p.m.
She notarized the appointments.
Then she opened her tablet.
“Congratulations, Mrs. Thorne.”
“As of eleven thirteen tonight, you control the Laurent Family Trust.”
Khloe stared at the confirmation screen.
Thirty-one percent of Thorne Global.
Three board seats.
Billions in assets.
And for the first time in her life, nobody else was holding the keys.
Then Rebecca’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Khloe sat forward.
Rebecca slowly lowered the phone.
“Damian just called an emergency board meeting.”
“For when?”
“Eight tomorrow morning.”
Khloe looked at the clock.
May you like
Damian had nine hours.
So did she.
