Chapter 18 - The Fall of Damian Thorne

The vote took place forty-eight hours later.

Damian entered Thorne Tower through the same marble lobby he had ruled for decades.

Employees watched silently.

No applause.

No greetings.

Inside the boardroom, Khloe sat in the chair once reserved for guests.

Marcus sat across from her.

Vincent did not attend.

He had respected her decision to step away.

Damian took his usual seat at the head of the table.

Khloe spoke first.

“Before we vote, you may address the board.”

Damian looked around the room.

He had spent forty years making people fear silence.

Now silence belonged to them.

“I built this company.”

Nobody responded.

“I saved it from collapse twice.”

Still nothing.

“I created jobs across four continents.”

Khloe nodded.

“All true.”

Damian looked at her.

“And now you think one terrible decision erases everything?”

Khloe’s answer was calm.

“No.”

“One terrible decision rarely destroys a person.”

“A pattern does.”

She listed them.

The hidden payments.

The manipulation of Marcus.

The use of Isabella.

The incapacity scheme.

The altered evidence.

The medical report.

The years spent hiding Celeste’s ownership.

Then Marcus spoke.

“And me.”

Damian looked at his son.

Marcus continued.

“You taught me that love was weakness.”

“That marriage was strategy.”

“That secrecy was leadership.”

“I believed you.”

“For too long.”

Damian’s face hardened.

“Do not blame me for your affair.”

“I don’t.”

Marcus looked at Khloe.

“That was mine.”

The vote began.

Seventeen directors supported Damian’s removal.

Three opposed.

One abstained.

Damian Thorne was no longer chairman.

He stood slowly.

No security was required.

At the door, he looked back at Khloe.

“You think controlling shares means controlling people.”

Khloe shook her head.

“That’s what you thought.”

“I intend to try something different.”

Damian left.

Marcus remained.

The board turned toward Khloe.

Dr. Naomi Bell spoke.

“We need an interim chair.”

Several directors looked at Khloe.

She surprised them.

“No.”

Naomi frowned.

“You have the votes.”

“That doesn’t mean I have the experience.”

Damian would have interpreted the statement as weakness.

Khloe understood it as accuracy.

“I’ll serve on the board.”

“I’ll learn.”

“I’ll ask questions.”

“And I’ll hire people who know what I don’t.”

Rebecca smiled.

The board appointed Naomi Bell as interim chair.

Marcus officially resigned as CEO.

An independent search began.

By evening, financial markets had reacted far more calmly than Damian predicted.

The company did not collapse.

Employees did not riot.

Civilization survived a woman admitting she had something to learn.

Khloe almost laughed at the absurdity.

She returned home for the first time since the hospital.

Marcus’s belongings were gone.

Only one box remained.

Inside were photographs.

Ten years of marriage.

Vacations.

Christmas mornings.

Charity dinners.

The day Marcus proposed.

At the bottom was a sealed letter.

Khloe opened it.

I will not ask you to forgive me.

I only hope our child grows up learning something I learned too late.

Love without honesty becomes possession.

Khloe folded the letter.

She cried.

Not because she wanted Marcus back.

Because part of her still loved the man she thought he had been.

Her phone rang.

Rebecca.

Khloe answered.

“What now?”

Rebecca’s voice was uneasy.

“The forensic audit found something.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

“How bad?”

“It isn’t about Damian.”

“Then who?”

Rebecca paused.

“It’s about Marcus.”

Khloe stared at the empty room.

“He transferred almost two billion dollars six months ago.”

“Where?”

“That’s the strange part.”

“Not to himself.”

“Not offshore.”

“Where?”

May you like

Rebecca took a breath.

“To an account in your name.”
