Chapter 17 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Antonio Rossi was found in Vermont.

Federal investigators reached him before dawn.

He had been living under another name for more than eight years.

He agreed to speak by secure video.

Isabella was not told.

Not yet.

Antonio appeared on screen older than Khloe remembered.

Thin.

Gray-haired.

Tired.

He stared at Khloe for a long time.

“You look like your mother.”

Khloe’s throat tightened.

“Tell me what happened.”

Antonio nodded.

He had discovered Damian’s hidden offshore network.

Celeste had hired him privately to trace the payments.

On the night she died, Antonio went to Thorne Tower with final evidence.

Damian confronted them.

Vincent arrived later.

The argument became intense.

Celeste threatened to remove Damian and turn the files over to regulators.

Then she collapsed.

Khloe gripped the table.

“Did anyone hurt her?”

“No.”

Khloe exhaled.

Antonio continued.

“But Damian delayed the ambulance.”

Vincent had told the truth about that.

Then Damian did something worse.

He forced Antonio to sign a confidentiality agreement.

When Antonio refused, Damian threatened his family.

His wife.

His young daughter.

Isabella.

Antonio disappeared to protect them.

But his disappearance destroyed Isabella anyway.

She grew up believing powerful families had erased her father.

“Why didn’t you contact her?”

Antonio looked broken.

“I was a coward.”

Khloe understood that word better than she wanted to.

“Did my mother betray you?”

“No.”

“Never.”

“Celeste tried to protect us.”

Antonio opened a box.

Inside were copies of the original offshore records.

The evidence Damian had spent nine years burying.

Khloe asked the final question.

“Did Damian send the photograph threatening me?”

Antonio shook his head.

“I did.”

Vincent stared at the screen.

Khloe felt shocked.

“Why?”

“I thought if you entered Thorne Global, Damian would do to you what he did to your mother.”

“I wanted your uncle to keep you away.”

Khloe looked down.

The anonymous threat that shaped nine years of her life had come from someone trying to protect her.

Once again, protection had become another prison.

Antonio continued.

“I was wrong.”

“You had the right to know.”

Khloe nodded.

“Yes.”

The court hearing began two hours later.

Damian expected to question Khloe’s competence.

Instead, Rebecca introduced Antonio Rossi.

The courtroom changed instantly.

Damian’s attorneys requested recess.

Denied.

Antonio testified.

He authenticated the offshore records.

He explained Northstar’s origins.

He described Damian’s threats.

Then Rebecca played the full recording proving the psychiatric evidence had been manipulated.

Damian watched his case collapse piece by piece.

The judge removed his glasses.

“Mr. Thorne, are you asking this court to rely on evidence your team knew had been edited?”

Damian’s attorney began speaking.

Damian interrupted.

“No.”

Every head turned.

His lawyer whispered urgently.

Damian ignored him.

“No.”

“I am withdrawing the petition.”

Khloe stared at him.

The judge frowned.

“Why?”

Damian looked at Khloe.

For the first time, he seemed old.

“Because I have already lost.”

The petition was dismissed.

Khloe’s trust was confirmed.

Her thirty-one percent voting control became fully active.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded the steps.

Marcus approached her but stopped several feet away.

“You won.”

Khloe shook her head.

“No.”

“My mother waited nine years for the truth.”

“Antonio lost his daughter for years.”

“Isabella destroyed herself.”

“You destroyed our marriage.”

“This is not winning.”

Marcus lowered his head.

Then Khloe looked toward the reporters.

“But it can still become something better.”

May you like

She walked to the microphones.

And announced an emergency shareholder vote to remove Damian Thorne permanently.
