Chapter 5 - The Promise

Khloe did not react immediately.
That disappointed Isabella.
The woman had clearly expected tears.
Instead, Khloe asked one question.
“What seat?”
Isabella blinked.
“Don’t pretend.”
“I’m not.”
Khloe folded her hands over the hospital blanket.
“Explain it.”
Isabella leaned back.
“Marcus told me your trust would receive board representation after your birthday.”
Khloe looked at Vincent.
That detail had not appeared in the first documents they had reviewed.
Isabella noticed.
“You really didn’t know.”
Her amusement vanished into genuine surprise.
“Wow.”
Khloe ignored the insult.
“What exactly did Marcus say?”
“He said once the trust converted, you could appoint three directors.”
Khloe’s pulse increased.
“And?”
“He said he could make sure you appointed me.”
Vincent swore under his breath.
Khloe remained focused.
“Why would I appoint my husband’s mistress?”
“He said you wouldn’t know.”
Khloe went still.
Isabella smiled again.
“The board seats could be delegated through nominee entities.”
Vincent looked furious.
Khloe finally understood how deep Marcus’s planning had gone.
He had not merely hidden her inheritance.
He had apparently considered using her voting rights without her knowledge.
Yet something did not fit.
“Why would you attack me tonight if Marcus had already promised you power?”
Isabella’s expression hardened.
“Because he changed.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“What happened?”
“He stopped taking my calls.”
Khloe looked toward the observation glass.
Marcus stood outside.
He could not hear them.
Isabella continued.
“He said things had gone too far.”
Khloe almost laughed.
“After six months?”
“He said he wanted to end it.”
“And you believed that was because of me?”
“I knew it was.”
Khloe studied her.
“No.”
Isabella’s smile disappeared.
“You don’t know Marcus as well as you think.”
“Neither do you.”
Khloe leaned forward slightly.
“He didn’t stop because he suddenly became a good husband.”
Isabella stared at her.
“He stopped because something scared him.”
Khloe looked at Vincent.
“Find out what happened three weeks ago.”
Vincent nodded.
Isabella’s confidence was fading.
Khloe noticed another detail.
“Who told you I would be upstairs tonight?”
Isabella looked away.
“Marcus.”
Khloe knew she was lying.
Marcus had been downstairs when Khloe decided to leave the gala.
Only Elaine had seen her walk toward the elevator.
Khloe spoke softly.
“Wrong answer.”
Isabella’s eyes snapped back.
“You couldn’t have known.”
Khloe continued.
“Who sent you upstairs?”
No answer.
Vincent stepped toward the table.
“Ms. Rossi, you are already on video committing an assault.”
“This is your opportunity to stop protecting whoever put you there.”
Isabella’s face became tense.
Khloe saw fear.
Real fear.
“I went upstairs myself.”
“You’re lying again.”
“I’m done talking.”
Khloe watched her for several seconds.
Then she turned toward the door.
Isabella suddenly spoke.
“You think your uncle is protecting you?”
Khloe stopped.
Isabella smiled faintly.
“Ask him where he was the night your mother died.”
Vincent froze.
Khloe slowly turned her wheelchair around.
“What did you say?”
Isabella’s eyes never left Vincent.
“Your family has more secrets than mine.”
Vincent opened the door.
“This interview is over.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Uncle Vincent.”
“We’re leaving.”
“What happened the night my mother died?”
Vincent did not answer.
Khloe felt the familiar sensation again.
Another door.
Another secret.
Another person deciding she did not deserve the truth.
“Tell me.”
Vincent finally looked at her.
“I was with your mother.”
Khloe’s throat tightened.
“Where?”
“At Thorne Tower.”
Khloe stared at him.
Her mother had supposedly died at home.
May you like
Vincent continued.
“And Damian was there too.”
