Chapter 11 - Laura’s Last Message
Helen described the night Laura Bennett was brought to White Oak.
Laura had suffered internal injuries.
She was conscious.
She repeatedly asked for Claire.
Eleanor arrived before the police.
She ordered Helen to list Laura as dead on arrival.
Then she questioned Laura privately.
“About what?” Claire asked.
“A file your mother had taken from Thomas’s cabin.”
Helen lowered her voice.
“Laura knew the names of every person involved in the smuggling operation.”
“Where is the file?”
“She never told Eleanor.”
Claire remembered her mother’s final belongings.
A watch.
A damaged purse.
A copy of The Secret Garden.
Nothing else.
Then she remembered the book had been mailed to her two weeks after the funeral.
There had been no return address.
Claire still owned it.
Daniel arranged for an officer to retrieve the book from her apartment.
Inside the spine, investigators found a thin memory card.
The files contained shipping manifests, photographs, and recordings.
The evidence connected Victor Hale to illegal weapons shipments.
It also revealed payments to customs officials, politicians, and members of the Whitmore board.
One photograph showed Eleanor meeting Victor at a private airfield.
Another showed Lucas transferring Thomas from the lakeside cabin.
The final file was an audio message from Laura.
“Claire, if you are hearing this, I could not come home.”
“I need you to understand that Thomas tried to stop them.”
“Eleanor controlled the foundation, but Victor controlled the ships.”
“They planned the accident together.”
“There is one more person above them.”
“A person Thomas trusted completely.”
The recording distorted.
Laura coughed painfully.
“The name is hidden in the trust amendment.”
“Find the original.”
“Do not trust the copy held by the board.”
The message ended.
Thomas listened from his hospital bed.
He looked stronger after receiving fluids and proper medication.
“The amendment,” Ethan said.
Thomas nodded.
“I changed the controlling trust six months before the accident.”
“Who received control?”
“You.”
Ethan stared at him.
“I was twenty-three.”
“The shares were held until your thirty-fifth birthday.”
Ethan had turned thirty-five three months earlier.
“Why didn’t control transfer to me?”
“Because Eleanor replaced the amendment.”
Thomas explained that the original had been sealed inside the Whitmore family vault.
The vault required two keys.
Thomas had carried one.
Eleanor carried the other.
“The brass key?” Ethan asked.
Thomas shook his head.
“That key opened the evidence locker.”
“My vault key was inside my anchor cuff link.”
Ethan remembered the cuff link found beneath the cabin bed.
It was now held in police evidence.
Thomas looked toward the door.
“The second key is still with Eleanor.”
Claire understood.
“She knows we need it.”
Thomas’s eyes darkened.

At that moment, every fire alarm in the Whitmore mansion began ringing.
