Chapter 15 - The Sins of Thomas Whitmore

Thomas explained that Whitmore Maritime had nearly collapsed twenty-two years earlier.

Banks refused further credit.

Thousands of employees faced losing their jobs.

Victor offered a solution.

One unregistered shipment.

No questions.

Enough money to save the company.

Thomas agreed.

The cargo contained weapons intended for a foreign militia.

He discovered the truth after the ship had already departed.

“I told myself I had saved families from unemployment,” Thomas said.

“But I had financed violence.”

Victor kept the signed authorization.

He used it to control Thomas for years.

When Thomas finally decided to confess, Eleanor learned the truth.

“She believed the company mattered more than the law,” Thomas said.

“She said confession would destroy Ethan’s inheritance.”

Claire looked at him.

“So she chose murder.”

“She chose control.”

The abandoned Black Harbor shipyard stood beneath a storm-dark sky.

Rusting cranes towered above the water.

Ethan, Claire, Daniel, and federal agents entered through the east gate.

Thomas remained in a secure vehicle.

The archive was hidden aboard the Whitmore Dawn, the first cargo vessel Thomas had purchased.

The ship sat permanently dry-docked inside an enormous warehouse.

Its steel hull had corroded.

Ethan and Claire climbed to the captain’s cabin.

The archive safe was open.

Documents covered the floor.

Victor Hale stood beside the desk.

He held a pistol.

Eleanor stood near the window.

“You came exactly as Thomas would,” she said.

“Desperate to prove you are better than us.”

Ethan looked at Victor.

“It’s over.”

Victor laughed.

“It was over the moment Thomas decided to grow a conscience.”

Claire noticed wires running from the archive shelves toward fuel containers beneath the cabin.

Another bomb.

Eleanor had planned to destroy the ship and everyone inside it.

Victor looked at her.

“You said we were taking the records.”

“We are.”

“You wired the warehouse.”

“To prevent them from following.”

Victor’s confidence faded.

“You intend to kill me too.”

Eleanor did not answer.

For the first time, Victor understood that he had never been her partner.

He had only been useful.

He aimed the gun at her.

Eleanor moved first.

She struck his wrist.

The shot tore through the ceiling.

Ethan lunged at Victor.

Claire grabbed the detonator from the desk.

Victor threw Ethan against the wall.

Eleanor pulled a second gun from her coat.

She aimed at Claire.

“Give me the trigger.”

Claire held it behind her back.

“You pushed me once.”

“You won’t get another chance.”

May you like

Eleanor’s finger tightened.

A shot exploded.
