Chapter 13 - The Broken Vault

The explosion tore through the east wing.
The floor lifted beneath Ethan.
Stone and fire crashed around him.
He woke beneath a fallen bookcase.
His ears rang.
Smoke filled his lungs.
Someone pulled him free.
Lucas dragged him toward the stairwell.
“Where is she?” Ethan coughed.
“Gone.”
Eleanor had vanished through an old tunnel beneath the vault.
The passage opened near the river behind the estate.
The detonator had destroyed part of the library, but the main vault survived.
Lucas had altered the explosive charges before entering the house.
“I knew she would burn it,” he said.
“Why help us now?”
Lucas looked toward the flames.
“Caleb Mercer was my friend.”
“I watched him die because I was too afraid to turn against her.”
He handed Ethan a silver key.
“I took it from Eleanor before she escaped.”
Firefighters carried them outside.
Claire was waiting beyond the gates.
She ran to Ethan.
His face was cut.
His hands were burned.
But he was alive.
“You went inside,” she said.
“So did Eleanor.”
“Where is she?”
“Running.”
The next morning, federal investigators opened the vault.
The anchor cuff link contained Thomas’s key.
Eleanor’s silver key opened the second lock.
Inside were property deeds, sealed contracts, personal letters, and the original controlling trust.
The document transferred fifty-one percent of Whitmore Maritime voting shares to Ethan upon his thirty-fifth birthday.
Until then, Thomas retained control.
If Thomas became incapacitated under suspicious circumstances, control passed to an independent trustee.
The trustee’s name stunned everyone.
Laura Bennett.
Claire’s mother.
A secondary clause named Claire as successor if Laura died before the transfer.
Ethan looked at her.
“For ten years, you legally controlled the deciding shares.”
“I never knew.”
“Eleanor did.”
That explained everything.
Eleanor had not only wanted Claire away from Ethan.
She needed Claire unaware of the trust.
Victor had used a forged copy to keep the board under Eleanor’s control.
Daniel found another sealed envelope inside the vault.
It was addressed to Ethan and Claire.
Thomas had written it before the accident.
“You may both believe power belongs to the person whose name appears on the document.”
“It does not.”
“Power belongs to the person willing to protect the truth when lying would be easier.”
“I chose Claire because she had nothing to gain and everything to lose.”
“I chose Ethan because one day he would have to decide whether family meant blood or character.”
Claire lowered the letter.
Ethan looked at her.
“I failed that decision ten years ago.”
“You were manipulated.”
“I still failed.”
A federal agent entered the vault room.
They had traced Eleanor’s escape vehicle.
It had been abandoned near a private airport.
Victor Hale’s jet had departed forty minutes earlier.
The flight plan listed Montreal.

But the plane had turned south after takeoff.
Its transponder had gone dark over the Atlantic.
