The archive investigation lasted three days.
Federal agents cataloged every document.
The records exposed more than twenty years of corruption.
Victor had bribed customs inspectors.
Board members had approved shell companies.
Eleanor had used the foundation to purchase political protection.
But Laura’s warning remained unexplained.
Eleanor answered to someone else.
Thomas remembered one man who had been present at the beginning.
Senator Malcolm Vane.
Vane had helped Whitmore Maritime secure government contracts during its financial crisis.
He had introduced Victor to foreign brokers.
He had also delivered the first illegal shipment proposal.
“He gave Eleanor access to people who could erase records,” Thomas said.
“He made my disappearance possible.”
Malcolm Vane was now preparing a presidential campaign.
His public image depended on honesty, patriotism, and charitable service.
Whitmore Foundation had donated millions to organizations connected to him.
Daniel found Vane’s name inside Laura’s hidden memory card.
A schedule showed that Vane met Eleanor the night before Thomas’s boating accident.
Another document authorized payment to White Oak Recovery Center through a campaign consulting company.
Ethan wanted to release everything immediately.
Claire stopped him.
“If we move too early, he will call the evidence fabricated.”
“He will destroy whatever we have not found.”
“What are you suggesting?”
“We make him believe Eleanor is ready to cooperate.”
Eleanor had been transferred to a prison hospital.
She refused to answer questions.
She demanded to speak with Ethan.
He visited her under federal supervision.
Her face was bruised from the fall.
One arm was secured to the bed.
“You saved me,” she said.
“I tried.”
“Even after everything.”
“I didn’t do it for you.”
“I did it because I refuse to become you.”
Eleanor studied him.
“Malcolm will kill your father.”
“We know about Vane.”
Fear flashed in her eyes.
It was the first honest emotion Ethan had seen from her.
“You don’t know enough.”
“Then tell me.”
“He built his career on men like Victor.”
“He owns judges, officers, and officials.”
“He will not allow Thomas to testify.”
“Help us stop him.”
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“You still believe truth wins because it is true.”
“No.”
Ethan leaned closer.
“I believe truth wins when the people hiding it lose control.”
Eleanor looked toward the camera in the corner.
Then she whispered something Ethan almost failed to hear.
“Founders’ Night.”
“What?”
“He will come to the foundation gala.”
“He always comes.”
