Chapter 15 - FAMILY BLOOD

Robert Bennett arrived at the police station voluntarily.
He was sixty-three.
Silver-haired.
Controlled.
He had served beside Daniel's father for thirty years.
Daniel had trusted him since childhood.
Robert looked at the photograph and sighed.
“Yes.”
“I met Arthur Vale.”
Daniel's voice was hard.
“You told me you barely knew him.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
Robert looked toward Sarah.
“Because your father asked me to.”
Daniel froze.
Robert explained that Charles Bennett discovered Arthur's network years before his death.
He quietly recruited Robert to help collect evidence.
The photograph had been taken during one of several meetings where Robert pretended to cooperate.
Daniel stared at his uncle.
“You were investigating them?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Charles believed Richard was watching you.”
Richard sat in the corner under guard.
He looked away.
Robert continued.
“Your father wanted you protected.”
Daniel's anger rose.
“He died protecting me from a truth everyone else knew.”
Robert's expression softened.
“He died trying to give you enough time to survive it.”
Sarah asked, “Where is Charles's private evidence box?”
Robert looked at her.
“You found the archive.”
Daniel nodded.
“One box was missing.”
“It wasn't missing.”
Robert reached inside his coat.
He pulled out an old brass key.
“I moved it.”
Richard looked stunned.
Robert continued.
“Charles told me to open it only if Arthur moved against Daniel directly.”
Daniel looked at the key.
“Where is it?”
“Your father's lake house.”
They drove there under federal escort.
The house had remained unused since Charles died.
Robert opened a hidden compartment beneath the study floor.
Inside was a steel box.
Daniel used the brass key.
The lid opened.
There were photographs.
Financial ledgers.
Audio tapes.
A handwritten diary.
And one sealed envelope addressed to Daniel.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Son,
If you are reading this, then I failed to stop them before they reached you.
Do not waste your life hating me for what I kept from you.
I chose silence because I thought knowledge would make you a target.
Perhaps silence made you one anyway.
Trust Robert.
Trust evidence.
Trust no story simply because it is easier to believe.
Daniel stopped reading.
Sarah looked away to give him privacy.
Then he continued.
The final line was short.
If Vanessa Cole ever enters your life, run.
Daniel lowered the letter.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Robert opened Charles's diary.
One entry changed everything.
Charles had met Michael Crane two weeks before Michael died.
Sarah stared at him.
“Michael knew Daniel's father?”
Robert nodded.
“They were sharing evidence.”
That meant their investigations had overlapped.
Michael hadn't been working alone.
Charles hadn't been working alone.
The network had killed one man.
Then, years later, another.
Sarah looked through the box.
Near the bottom, she found a photograph of Arthur Vale entering a private clinic.
The date was three days before Charles Bennett's surgery.
Robert whispered, “That's the piece we never understood.”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Sarah understood immediately.

Arthur had not merely targeted their money.
He had access to their medical care.
