Chapter 18 - THE CHOICE
Vanessa turned toward Daniel.
That hesitation saved Sarah.
Sarah grabbed the dining chair and shoved it between them.
Vanessa stumbled.
Agents rushed forward.
She swung wildly.
Daniel grabbed Sarah and pulled her backward.
An officer knocked the knife away.
Vanessa screamed.
Not in fear.
In rage.
“You think she saved you?”
She shouted at Daniel.
“She destroyed your life.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
“You did.”
Vanessa struggled against the officers.
“You loved me.”
Daniel's expression was almost sad.
“I loved a person who never existed.”
For the first time, Vanessa became quiet.
Sarah watched something collapse behind her eyes.
Not remorse.
Recognition.
Her greatest weapon had always been belief.
If someone believed her, she controlled them.
Daniel no longer did.
Neither did Sarah.
Neither did the police.
Neither did the courts.
Vanessa had finally become powerless.
As officers led her toward the door, she stopped beside Sarah.
“Your father begged me.”
Sarah's body went rigid.
Daniel stepped forward.
Sarah raised a hand.
She didn't need him to protect her from the words.
Vanessa smiled.
“He begged me to leave you out of it.”
Sarah looked directly into her eyes.
“And you did.”
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Sarah continued.
“You left me alive.”
“You watched me grow up.”
“You watched me work for Michael.”
“You watched me survive all of it.”
“And eventually, I became the person who stopped you.”
Vanessa stared at her.
Sarah stepped closer.
“So if my father begged for one thing before he died, he won.”
The officers took Vanessa away.
Outside, dawn was breaking.
Sarah stood on the porch of the house where she had once been a child.
Daniel joined her.
“You okay?”
“No.”
He nodded.
“Me neither.”
That answer felt better than false comfort.
Sarah looked toward the road where Vanessa disappeared inside a police vehicle.
“What happens now?”
Daniel exhaled.
“Annulment.”
Sarah almost smiled.
“I meant with the case.”
“So did I.”
This time, both of them laughed.
Only briefly.
But it mattered.
Months later, the trials began.
Vanessa was convicted on multiple counts connected to the attempt against Daniel and conspiracy charges tied to earlier crimes.
Additional proceedings followed concerning Thomas Avery and Michael Crane.
Arthur Vale's empire collapsed under testimony, documents, financial records, and witnesses who finally came forward.
Richard Hales testified for eleven days.
His sentence was still severe.
Lucas received prison time.
Emily entered witness protection temporarily before returning to her daughter.
The Bennett board removed every executive connected to Richard.
Daniel created an independent review committee.
He ordered two decades of company records opened to investigators.
He told the board one thing.
“No reputation is worth protecting more than the truth.”
Sarah attended the final hearing involving her father's case.
When the judge announced that Thomas Avery's death was officially being reclassified as a homicide, Sarah closed her eyes.
Nineteen years.
One word.
Homicide.
It didn't give her father back.
