Chapter 20 - THE MAN WHO WAS ALREADY DEAD

The discovery should have reopened everything.
Instead, Sarah surprised Daniel.
She placed the photograph inside an evidence envelope and handed it to Reed.
Then she went home.
Daniel followed her into the hallway.
“You're not going to investigate?”
Sarah unlocked her door.
“No.”
He looked genuinely shocked.
“This from the woman who crashed my wedding because of an anonymous photograph?”
“That woman hadn't slept properly in eight years.”
“And this woman?”
Sarah turned toward him.
“This woman understands something now.”
Daniel waited.
Sarah continued.
“I don't have to chase every monster personally.”
“We have police.”
“Federal investigators.”
“Evidence.”
“People whose job is to do this.”
Daniel smiled slowly.
“That sounds suspiciously healthy.”
“Don't get used to it.”
He laughed.
Sarah looked through the window at the city.
Vanessa was in prison.
Arthur was awaiting the outcome of additional federal proceedings.
Richard had confessed.
Lucas had confessed.
Thomas Avery finally had the truth attached to his name.
Michael Crane's warnings had been heard.
Charles Bennett's evidence had protected his son.
The story that began years before Sarah understood it had finally reached an ending.
Not a perfect ending.
Perfect endings belonged to people who had not lost anyone.
This one was real.
Daniel stepped beside her.
“You know Reed is going to call the moment they identify that man.”
“I know.”
“You're going to answer.”
“Probably.”
“You're going to get involved.”
Sarah gave him a look.
“Probably.”
Daniel nodded.
“So all this maturity lasted about thirty seconds.”
“Forty.”
“Impressive.”
Sarah smiled.
Outside, the city moved normally.
Cars passed.
Windows glowed.
People ate dinner, argued, laughed, and went to sleep without knowing how close Daniel had come to dying in a ballroom one year earlier.
Sarah thought about that night.
Daniel shouting at her.
Vanessa ordering security to remove her.
The glass breaking.
The recording playing.
One decision had opened nineteen years of buried truth.
Sarah no longer wished she had arrived sooner.
She no longer blamed herself for not saving Michael.
Or Thomas.
Or Charles.
She had finally accepted that surviving was not the same thing as failing.
Her phone rang.
Detective Reed.
Daniel looked at her.
Sarah sighed.
“Don't say it.”
“I didn't say anything.”
“You were about to.”
“Absolutely.”
She answered.
“Reed?”
His voice was different.
Urgent.
Controlled.
“Sarah, we identified Henry Vale.”
She looked at Daniel.
“And?”
“He isn't Arthur Vale's father.”
Sarah frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Reed continued.
“The man buried twenty-six years ago wasn't Henry.”
Daniel's expression changed as he listened.
Sarah walked toward the table.
“Then who was buried?”
“We don't know yet.”
“And Henry?”
A pause.
“We found evidence he has been living under another identity.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Of course.
Another identity.
Another carefully constructed death.
Another person watching from outside the story.
Reed continued.
“And Sarah?”
“Yes?”
“We searched Richard Hales's sealed files again.”
“There is a document we missed.”
“What document?”
“A target list.”
Sarah's blood went cold.
“We already have the target list.”
“No.”
Reed's voice lowered.
“That was Arthur's list.”
“This one is Henry's.”
Sarah gripped the phone.
“How many names?”
“Sixty-two.”
Daniel went still.
Sarah asked the question she already feared.
“Am I on it?”
Reed didn't answer immediately.
That silence told her everything.
“Sarah.”
“Yes?”
“Your name isn't listed as a target.”
She exhaled.
Then Reed finished.
“It's listed under successor.”
Sarah stared into the darkness outside her window.
“What does that mean?”
“We don't know.”
Then Daniel's phone buzzed.
He looked down.
Unknown number.
One photograph.
Sarah standing at her apartment window.
Taken seconds earlier.
Daniel rushed toward the curtains and pulled them closed.
Another message arrived.
Sarah read it over his shoulder.
YOU FINISHED ARTHUR'S GAME.
NOW YOU GET TO LEARN WHO STARTED IT.
A final message appeared.
WELCOME HOME, SARAH.
She looked at Daniel.
Neither spoke.
Somewhere across the city, a man who had been legally dead for twenty-six years was watching them.
And for the first time, Sarah understood that Vanessa Cole had never been the beginning of the story.
She had only been the first secret Sarah managed to uncover.
The phone rang again.
Sarah answered.
A man's elderly voice whispered her name.
“Hello, Sarah.”
She did not move.
“Who is this?”
The man laughed softly.
Then he said the words that made every other secret feel small.
“Ask yourself why Thomas Avery adopted you.”
The call ended.
Sarah slowly lowered the phone.
Daniel stared at her.
“Sarah?”
She looked at him.
“My father never told me I was adopted.”
Outside the closed curtains, a camera shutter clicked.
Once.
Then twice.
May you like
Then silence.
