Chapter 16 - ARTHUR VALE

Federal agents arrested Arthur Vale forty-eight hours later.
The news exploded across the country.
Television networks ran images of the billionaire philanthropist entering a courthouse.
His attorneys called the evidence fabricated.
His foundation released statements of shock.
Business partners denied knowledge.
Politicians returned donations.
Hospitals removed his name from buildings.
But Arthur remained calm.
Even in handcuffs.
Sarah saw him only once before the hearing.
He was escorted past her in the courthouse corridor.
He stopped.
The agents pulled him forward.
Arthur looked directly at Sarah.
“You have your father's eyes.”
Sarah felt cold.
“You knew him.”
Arthur smiled.
“Everyone knew Thomas.”
Daniel moved between them.
Arthur looked at him next.
“Charles raised an emotional son.”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“And your mistake was assuming that made me weak.”
Arthur smiled again.
“No.”
“My mistake was trusting Vanessa.”
They moved him away.
That sentence stayed with Sarah.
Arthur blamed Vanessa.
Vanessa blamed Richard.
Richard blamed Arthur.
Every person in the network saw themselves as less guilty than someone else.
Then prosecutors revealed the evidence.
The hidden ledger.
The financial transfers.
The recordings.
Charles Bennett's files.
Michael Crane's emails.
Emily Cole's testimony.
The bartender's statement.
Sarah's wedding recording.
Vanessa's voice ordering Daniel's glass prepared.
Forensic testing confirmed the residue in the shattered champagne contained a substance capable of causing severe medical distress.
The prosecution did not need Sarah to explain chemistry.
They only needed to show intent.
And Vanessa had provided plenty.
In a recorded interrogation, Vanessa finally admitted she expected Daniel to collapse that night.
Her defense attorneys tried to stop the interview.
Too late.
Daniel watched the footage once.
Never again.
Weeks passed.
Charges multiplied.
Arthur faced conspiracy, fraud, financial crimes, and charges connected to several deaths under reopened investigation.
Richard entered a cooperation agreement.
Lucas accepted a plea deal after Vanessa refused to protect him.
Vanessa accepted nothing.
She insisted she would win.
Sarah visited Michael's grave for the first time in years.
She brought no flowers.
Only a printed copy of the indictment.
She sat beside the stone.
“You were right.”
Wind moved through the trees.
“I wish you'd been wrong.”
Daniel stood several yards away.
He had offered to stay in the car.
Sarah asked him to come.
After a while, he approached.
“Do you feel better?”
“No.”
Sarah looked at the grave.
“But I feel finished hiding.”
Daniel understood.
His marriage had lasted less than an hour.
Sarah's grief had lasted half her life.
Neither wound could disappear simply because people had been arrested.
But truth had given both of them somewhere to stand.
Daniel looked toward Michael's headstone.
“He saved my life too.”
Sarah shook her head.
“He left a trail.”
“You followed it.”
“You saved your own life by believing me.”
Daniel gave a humorless smile.
“I almost didn't.”
Sarah looked at him.
“But you did.”
They started toward the car.
Then Sarah's phone rang.
Detective Reed.
She answered.
His voice was tense.
“Sarah, we have a problem.”
“What?”
“Vanessa escaped transport.”
Sarah stopped walking.
Daniel turned.
May you like
Reed continued.
“And we think she's coming for you.”
