Chapter 16 - Elena's Last Secret

They returned to the mansion before sunrise.
Mrs. Hargrove finally told them everything.
Three weeks before the ambush, Elena had discovered financial records hidden in Dominic's father's old company archives.
Victor Raines had been siphoning money through shell companies for decades.
But that was not the worst part.
Several payments were linked to violent intimidation, witnesses who disappeared, and officials who had been bribed to bury investigations.
Elena copied the records.
Then she contacted a federal prosecutor.
Dominic stared at Mrs. Hargrove.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"Because your name appeared in the files."
"I was seventeen when some of those payments happened."
"She knew that."
"Then why?"
"Because later payments were routed through companies you owned."
Dominic went quiet.
Mrs. Hargrove continued.
"Elena didn't know whether you were involved."
Clara saw the pain in his face.
Dominic whispered, "She thought I might be like my father."
"No."
Mrs. Hargrove shook her head.
"She was trying to prove you weren't."
Elena planned to give the records to prosecutors.
Victor learned about it.
The night of the ambush, Hargrove secretly followed Elena because she suspected she was being watched.
She arrived after the attack.
Elena was alive.
Noah was screaming in the back seat.
Hargrove pulled both of them out.
Then Victor's second vehicle appeared.
She had seconds.
"I hid Elena in my car."
"And Noah?"
"He wouldn't stop screaming."
Hargrove's eyes filled with tears.
"I told him Mommy was gone."
Dominic's hands tightened.
"Then you kept lying."
"Victor had people in your organization."
"Who?"
"I never learned."
Clara remembered the audio room.
"So you conditioned Noah."
Mrs. Hargrove looked ashamed.
"Every time he tried to describe the car, the pearl, the night, I frightened him into silence."
"You could have told Dominic privately."
"I didn't know which of his people belonged to Victor."
Dominic turned away.
For years, paranoia had ruled the mansion without him knowing.
Clara suddenly remembered something.
The pearl brooch.
"Where did you get it?"
Mrs. Hargrove touched her empty collar.
"Elena gave it to me."
"Why?"
"The brooch contains a storage chip."
Everyone stared at her.
Mrs. Hargrove removed the damaged pearl Clara had found.
She twisted the metal backing.
A tiny memory card slid out.
"The records Elena copied."
Dominic stared.

For two years, the evidence everyone had killed and lied for had been worn openly inside his own house.
