Chapter 20 - When the House Learned to Breathe

Three months later, the Vale mansion no longer felt like a museum built around fear.

The armed guards at the front entrance had been reduced to discreet security.

Children's drawings covered part of the breakfast room wall.

Noah's toys were no longer arranged perfectly.

They were everywhere.

Dominic stepped on a wooden dinosaur during a conference call and swore so loudly Elena laughed from the doorway.

He looked offended.

"You encouraged this."

"I survived two years in neurological rehabilitation."

She smiled.

"I earned the right to watch you lose battles against plastic dinosaurs."

Elena was still recovering.

Some memories had returned.

Others remained missing.

She attended therapy twice a week.

Noah attended his own sessions with Dr. Foster.

He still had difficult nights.

Certain sounds frightened him.

Sometimes he crawled beneath his bed.

Sometimes he stopped speaking for hours.

No one forced him out anymore.

Dominic would sit on the floor nearby.

Elena would hum.

Clara would leave a cup of water where he could reach it.

Eventually, Noah always emerged on his own.

Tyler's surgery had been successful.

He was home recovering with their mother.

Clara had tried to resign twice.

Dominic rejected both attempts.

On the third, Elena intercepted the letter.

"You can't quit."

Clara smiled.

"Watch me."

"Noah hid your shoes."

Clara looked down.

Her shoes were indeed missing.

From the hallway, Noah giggled.

Clara found him behind the sofa.

"You stole my shoes."

"No."

He grinned.

It had become his favorite word.

Clara crossed her arms.

"Then where are they?"

Noah pointed at Dominic.

"Daddy did it."

Dominic nearly choked on his coffee.

Elena laughed.

For a moment, the house contained nothing darker than an ordinary family teasing one another.

Then Dominic's phone rang.

Mateo.

His expression changed as he listened.

"What?"

Elena immediately went still.

Dominic ended the call.

Clara knew the look.

"What happened?"

Dominic walked toward the study.

"Someone mailed a package to the federal prosecutor."

Inside was a photograph taken the night of Elena's ambush.

It showed Victor Raines beside the burned vehicle.

Samuel Pike stood near him.

But there was a third man in the picture.

Dominic opened the scanned image.

Elena stared at it.

Her face lost all color.

"No."

Dominic looked at her.

"You know him?"

Elena stepped backward.

For three months, everyone had believed Victor Raines had ordered the attack.

Everyone had believed the conspiracy was finished.

Elena shook her head.

"Victor didn't plan the ambush."

Clara felt cold.

"Then who did?"

Elena pointed at the third man.

An older figure stood partly hidden in darkness.

Silver hair.

Expensive coat.

A familiar posture.

Dominic zoomed in.

His hands began to shake.

The man had been declared dead nine years earlier.

Dominic whispered the name.

"My father."

From the hallway, Noah appeared.

He looked at the photograph.

His smile disappeared.

Then the four-year-old boy who had once been too terrified to speak walked toward his father and whispered four words.

"I saw him too."

Dominic slowly turned.

Outside, beyond the black iron gates, a dark sedan remained parked beneath the trees.

Its headlights switched on.

May you like

Then it disappeared into the night.
