Chapter 19 - The Mother Who Came Home

Elena remembered Dominic.
Not everything.
Not at once.
But she remembered his face.
She remembered their wedding.
She remembered Noah as a baby.
And when Clara showed her a recent photograph of him, Elena pressed both hands over her mouth and began to cry.
"My baby."
Dominic sat beside her.
"He's safe."
Elena grabbed his sleeve.
"Victor?"
"Federal agents are looking for him."
"No."
Her fear intensified.
"Dominic, he has people everywhere."
"So did I."
Dominic looked toward Mateo.
"Not anymore."
Elena was taken to a secure medical center.
Noah's reunion with her was handled carefully.
Dr. Foster warned everyone not to turn it into a dramatic surprise.
No cameras.
No crowd.
No pressure.
Elena sat in a quiet room.
Clara brought Noah to the doorway.
He stopped.
His mother looked older.
Thinner.
Different.
But when Elena began humming the lullaby, Noah's eyes widened.
He looked at Clara.
Then at Dominic.
Then back at Elena.
"Mommy?"
Elena broke.
She covered her mouth.
"Yes, sweetheart."
Noah did not run to her immediately.
He stood there trembling.
Elena opened her arms but did not move.
"It's okay."
Noah took one step.
Then another.
Halfway across the room, he began to cry.
Elena dropped to her knees.
He ran the final distance.
Dominic turned away, pressing one hand over his face.
Clara cried openly.
No one cared.
For the first time in two years, Noah Vale was held by his mother without fear.
Later that evening, federal agents arrested Victor Raines at a private hangar outside Chicago.
Samuel Pike was arrested with him.
The evidence on the memory card connected Victor to the ambush, financial crimes, obstruction, bribery, and multiple conspiracies.
The Vale empire was not untouched.
Dominic surrendered several companies for investigation.
Millions in assets were frozen.
News networks surrounded the estate.
Old allies disappeared.
But inside the mansion, something unexpected happened.
The security presence decreased.
The silver bells disappeared.
The red room was dismantled.
The hidden passages were sealed.
And Mrs. Hargrove was arrested for child endangerment, unlawful medication, obstruction, and falsifying records.
Before officers took her away, she asked to see Noah.
Dominic refused.
Clara agreed.
For once, Dominic listened.
Mrs. Hargrove looked at Clara.
"Tell him I was sorry."
Clara shook her head.
"No."
Mrs. Hargrove's eyes filled.
"Why?"
"Because apologies are yours to carry."
Clara looked toward Noah's room.
"He doesn't owe you the work of making you feel forgiven."
Mrs. Hargrove lowered her head.
The officers led her away.
The mansion doors closed behind her.

For the first time, Noah did not flinch at the sound.
