Chapter 9 - The Lie That Built the House

Dominic found Mrs. Hargrove in the library.

She was drinking tea.

The estate remained locked down.

Two guards stood outside every exit.

Yet she looked almost relaxed.

Dominic placed the tablet in front of her.

"Explain."

Mrs. Hargrove watched the footage once.

Then she looked up.

"You already decided what you believe."

"That's my wife in your car."

"No."

"That is Elena's ring."

"Many women wear rings."

Dominic slammed one hand onto the table.

The teacup rattled.

"Where did you take her?"

Mrs. Hargrove remained silent.

Clara stood near the doorway with Mateo.

Noah was upstairs with another guard.

Dominic leaned closer.

"For twenty-eight years, you worked for my family."

"I raised you after your father disappeared into business and your mother disappeared into pills."

"You don't get to use my childhood tonight."

"I cleaned your wounds."

"Where is Elena?"

"I taught you which fork to hold before you could read."

"Where is my wife?"

Mrs. Hargrove's eyes finally changed.

Not fear.

Resentment.

"She was going to destroy everything."

Dominic went still.

"What?"

"Elena believed morality mattered more than survival."

Clara felt Mateo shift beside her.

Mrs. Hargrove continued.

"She found records."

"What records?"

"Payments."

"To whom?"

Mrs. Hargrove smiled sadly.

"People who made your empire possible."

Dominic's voice dropped.

"My father."

"And later you."

"I never authorized illegal payments."

"You benefited from them."

Dominic stepped back as if she had struck him.

"Elena wanted to go to federal investigators."

Clara understood.

"So you stopped her."

Mrs. Hargrove looked at Clara.

"You should have taken the money."

Dominic's eyes became lethal.

"Was the ambush yours?"

"No."

"Whose?"

Mrs. Hargrove looked toward the dark windows.

"Someone far more dangerous than me."

Before Dominic could continue, an alarm sounded.

Mateo touched his earpiece.

His face changed.

"Noah's room."

Clara ran first.

The bedroom was empty.

The window was closed.

The guard outside swore no one had passed him.

Then Clara saw the wardrobe.

Its back panel stood open.

Behind it was a narrow service passage.

An old servants' corridor running inside the walls.

Dominic stared into the darkness.

Mrs. Hargrove had lived in the mansion for nearly three decades.

She knew every passage.

Every hidden door.

Every blind spot.

And Noah was gone.
